In a disheartening incident that has shocked the local and LGBTQ+ communities, a memorial dedicated to Renee Good, a beloved queer mother of three who tragically lost her life at the hands of an ICE agent, was subject to an arson attack. On Tuesday night, an unknown assailant attempted to destroy this poignant tribute by setting fire to a nearby woodpile, using gasoline as an accelerant. This act of vandalism has sparked outrage and calls for justice from community leaders and advocates.
Lesbian Representative Angie Craig, a Democrat from Minnesota, has vowed to seek answers and justice for this act of hatred. The Minneapolis Police Department has launched an investigation into the incident, although no suspects had been identified or apprehended at the time of reporting.
On-site, quick-thinking neighbors from a nearby apartment complex took swift action. Equipped with fire extinguishers, they managed to contain the blaze before it could cause extensive damage or harm anyone present. Their courageous efforts prevented what could have been a far more devastating outcome.
The local community, already grieving the loss of Renee Good, has been further disturbed by this attack. Wren Clinefelter, a resident near the memorial, expressed the collective dismay, stating, "We’ve been hypervigilant in our neighborhood, and obviously everyone’s keeping an eye out all of the time. So it’s definitely very disheartening to hear that someone would try and burn down a memorial for a woman who was killed in our neighborhood."
Community leaders have spoken out in support of Renee’s family and the Minneapolis community. In a message posted on social media, Rep. Craig emphasized the need for accountability, saying, "Renee’s family and the Minneapolis community deserve the chance to mourn her. This is unacceptable, and we must hold anyone involved in this hateful incident accountable."
Minneapolis City Council member Jason Chavez also condemned the heinous act, describing it as "despicable." He highlighted the arsonist's use of gasoline to target the memorial, emphasizing the severity and malicious intent behind the attack.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has pledged to support the community in healing and preserving the memorials. "We will always prioritize giving our community space to grieve and heal," Frey stated. He also outlined plans to engage the community in preserving not only the memorial for Renee Good but also for Alex Pretti, another victim of ICE violence who was an ICU nurse with the Department of Veterans Affairs.
The wider implications of ICE's actions in Minneapolis have been a topic of significant concern. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has criticized "Operation Metro Surge," an ICE operation that reportedly caused over $200 million in economic damage, affecting local businesses, workers, and residents.
Governor Walz has called for federal accountability, urging the state's congressional delegation to help secure reimbursement for the damages incurred. "The federal government needs to pay for what they broke here. There is going to be accountability for the things that happened, but one of the things is the incredible and immense costs that were borne by the people of this state," Walz asserted.
In light of these events, community organizers and LGBTQ+ rights advocates are rallying to support Renee Good’s family and to ensure that her memory is honored and protected. They are determined to turn their grief into action, advocating for justice and systemic changes to prevent further tragedies.
As the investigation continues, the community remains vigilant, united in their resolve to protect each other and to ensure that spaces meant for mourning and remembrance are respected. The attack on Renee Good’s memorial is a stark reminder of the challenges that marginalized communities continue to face, and it underscores the importance of solidarity and resilience in the fight for justice.
