Rutger published: Matthew Hubbard Discusses New Book, Chosen Family, and Advocacy for LGBTQ+ Rights

If you're on a quest through LGBTQ+ young adult literature that uplifts and empowers, keep an eye on Matthew Hubbard. He's making waves with his debut novel, *The Last Boyfriend's Rules For Revenge*, and his upcoming release, *The Rebel's Guide To Pride*, which promises a blend that's politically charged, yet full-hearted and fun. These books dive deep, tackling themes like identity and resistance with a perfect mix that keeps you hooked.

Set your calendars! On May 6, 2025, *The Rebel's Guide To Pride* hits bookstores and it's bound  to strike a chord with young queer readers, especially those in small towns. Hubbard puts it beautifully: "My first book was about finding where you fit in this big ol' puzzle. Even if you're in a small town, you've got your place. *The Rebel's Guide To Pride* takes it further—it says, 'Demand your space. Fight your fight.'”

Finding inspiration in personal stories

Matthew Hubbard pulls a lot from his own life growing up in a small Alabama town. He recalls, "There's this shoe box Zeke, my protagonist, has at story's beginning. It's not just a shoe box—it's me stuffing all my fears and self-doubt away." Zeke's journey in unpacking himself mirrors what so many readers experience in their own lives.

Rebellion takes center stage in *The Rebel's Guide To Pride*. Hubbard began his writing journey during backlash against Florida's "Don't Say Gay" law. "I was steamed—frustrated and wanting change," he shares. "They try making us feel powerless. But through writing, I took back a bit control."

Exploring YA themes with a genuine touch

Hubbard's books, while aimed at young adults, don't shy away from tough, complex themes. "Being a teen, it often felt like everything was life or death," he reflects. "Seeing it through a 17-year-old's eyes captures just how raw and intense life can be." It's this rich emotional backdrop that makes his storytelling so compelling.

Zeke's growth, interwoven with his parents' reactions, remains a focal point. Hubbard dives deep, exploring how parental support—or lack thereof—shapes a queer teen's path. "In my debut, we saw a supportive dad. With *Rebel's*, I asked, 'What if there's no support? Where do you turn?' The answer's simple—friends become your lifeline."

The essential role played by chosen family

Chosen family isn't just a theme in *The Rebel's Guide To Pride*—it's a lifeline. Hubbard highlights how vital it can be: "I truly found my family in my 30s," he admits. "In our queer community, that unconditional love isn't always a given growing up."

The book also tackles what it means being a "good gay" versus a "bad gay." Hubbard notes, "When politics mix in, you're often told you're either too quiet or too loud." Through Zeke, he explores this tension and societal demands.

Empowering voices in challenging times

Amidst recent events impacting LGBTQ+ folks, Hubbard felt it urgent his book address these struggles. "Tennessee was eyeing a ban on pride and drag, and it stuck with me," he recalls. Yet, *The Rebel's Guide To Pride* isn't just about challenges—it's about celebrating queer joy.

"What's a better picture than teens rebelling through underground speakeasies?" Hubbard prompts. It's a vivid portrayal, showing resilience and community strength.

Already, Hubbard's penning his third book, *Drop Dead Handsome*, drawing from films like *Miss Congeniality* and *Drop Dead Gorgeous*. "Politics are on pause; it's all romance here," he says. As expected, it explores new horizons beyond rights battles.

*The Rebel's Guide To Pride* will be available May 6, 2025, and you can preorder now. It's poised as a vital addition, offering both a mirror and a window—reflecting queer youth's journey and inviting others in.
