This past Saturday, the vibrant and bustling streets of Buenos Aires became the stage for one of Argentina’s largest Pride marches. Thousands of participants filled the air with sounds of celebration and resistance, moving from the historic Plaza de Mayo to the steps of the National Congress building. The march not only celebrated the LGBTQ+ community but also served as a pointed protest against the policies and rhetoric of Argentina's right-wing President Javier Milei.
The event saw a massive turnout, with people from all walks of life coming together to demonstrate their support for LGBTQ+ rights and their rejection of President Milei’s controversial statements and policies. Many in the crowd were galvanized by recent political developments, including the unexpected success of Milei’s party, La Libertad Avanza (LLA), in the latest legislative elections. This success, which took many by surprise, has given Milei substantial influence in the legislature.
President Javier Milei’s party, La Libertad Avanza, recently secured more than 40 percent of the vote across Argentina, winning 15 of the 24 districts. The party's victory has positioned Milei, who aligns himself with former U.S. President Donald Trump, as a significant force in Argentine politics. His legislative power now allows him to push through policies with little opposition.
The political climate under Milei has been marked by division and inflammatory rhetoric, particularly against marginalized communities. Earlier this year, during a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Milei made incendiary comments about the LGBTQ+ community, labeling their advocacy efforts as ‘child abuse’ and ‘pedophilia.’ His speech was part of a broader attack on what he termed as ‘woke ideology’, which he described as a societal ‘cancer’ that needed eradication.
The stirring slogan "Against hate and violence: more pride and unity," echoed through the streets as marchers wound their way through Buenos Aires. For many participants, the march was not just about celebrating their identity; it was a necessary stand against growing hostility. "These days, with the current government, there is a lot of hate. You can see it in the streets and on social media," said Nahuel Vassallo, a 22-year-old student. "That’s why standing here to defend our rights and who we are is so key."
The march served as a platform for voices of resistance against policies that threaten the progress made in LGBTQ+ rights in Argentina. Attendees carried signs demanding justice and equality, highlighting concerns over the government's recent actions. Among these actions was Milei’s decree to amend the 2012 Gender Identity Law, which had been a landmark in depathologizing transgender identities by removing the need for medical diagnosis to confirm gender identity. His amendment now bans gender-affirming treatments and surgeries for transgender minors, sparking outrage and fear throughout the community.
According to the latest data from the National Observatory on LGBT+ Hate Crimes, incidents of hate crimes have surged by 70 percent in the first half of 2025 compared to the previous year. Alarmingly, more than half of these crimes have been perpetrated by security forces, underscoring a climate of impunity and systemic bias.
Viviana Cardano, a representative of the ATE state-workers union, expressed grave concerns about the current state of affairs. "Today we are all here to reject the policies of this new government and the persecution that the LGBTQ+ community has been suffering since Milei’s statements in Davos," she said during the march.
The rally in Buenos Aires, while a celebration of diversity, was also a stark reminder of the ongoing battles for equality and justice. As participants chanted and waved banners, one prominent sign captured the collective sentiment: "There is no pride without justice."
The event also served as a rallying call for continued support and advocacy, urging more people to stand against the divisive policies of the current administration. The march underscored the resilience and unity of the LGBTQ+ community, emphasizing that their fight for rights and recognition is far from over.
