Mary Trump, niece of former President Donald Trump and a clinical psychologist, has publicly criticized her uncle’s response to the Los Angeles wildfires. She believes his actions during this crisis are indicative of how he would handle emergencies should he return to office.
The wildfires in Los Angeles have already caused significant devastation, with an estimated 24 people either dead or missing, over 12,000 structures damaged, and evacuations impacting more than 150,000 individuals. As the fires rage on, misinformation has spread, to which the former president has contributed.
Mary Trump expressed her frustration with her uncle’s behavior on her Substack, asserting that instead of using his platform to unite people and provide aid, he is engaging in political attacks and disseminating false information. Last week, Donald Trump took to Truth Social, claiming that California Governor Gavin Newsom “refused to sign the water restoration declaration” that would have allegedly allowed water to flow into the fire-stricken areas. He referred to Newsom derogatively in his post. However, Mary Trump points out that this declaration was fabricated, serving only to shift blame onto Newsom.
Mary Trump sees this behavior as part of a pattern, one that was evident during Donald Trump’s first term as president. She recalls several instances where he failed to effectively manage crises, including Hurricane Maria and the COVID-19 pandemic. According to her, he withheld disaster aid from states led by governors who did not show him sufficient deference, diverted resources away from those in need, and often relied on pseudo-scientific advice that exacerbated the situations.
“What we can expect, because we’ve seen time and time again: If you need help in a crisis, but you do not kiss Donald’s ass sufficiently, he will not help you,” Mary Trump wrote. She criticized him for using crises to perpetuate misinformation and conspiracy theories, which she says leads to a greater loss of life and further divides the country.
Mary Trump also highlights her uncle’s penchant for sowing discord during times when unity is crucial. She believes that division benefits him personally, even as it harms the nation. “Division wears us down, even as it leaves him unaltered. I actually think it energizes him,” she stated. She accused him of using division to wear down his opposition, making it harder for people to unite against him.
Mary Trump called for unity in the face of such tactics, urging people to support each other and reject the notion that self-preservation requires abandoning others. “We know what’s coming and we know how to combat what’s headed our way: stick together—don’t let anybody tell you that the best way for you to survive in a crisis is to stop caring about other people.”
The LA fires and their mismanagement are just another example of what Mary Trump sees as the dangers of her uncle’s leadership style. Her comments serve as a warning about the potential consequences of another Trump administration, emphasizing the need for solidarity and resilience among those who might be affected by his policies.
Mary Trump’s outspoken criticism adds to a broader narrative of dissent within the Trump family and provides insight into the dynamics that shape their public disagreements. Her perspective as both a family member and a psychologist offers a unique lens through which to understand the former president’s actions and motivations.
