Rutger published: Marks & Spencer Under Pressure Amid Calls for Boycott Over Alleged LGBTQ+ Insensitivity

Marks & Spencer, a well-loved British retailer, finds itself in hot water over its current ads on GB News. This all kicked off after one presenter made comments that many saw as homophobic, causing a storm and prompting calls from some quarters urging a boycott.

Comments that stirred controversy

It all started when Josh Howie, who hosts GB News' show *Headliners*, made some eyebrow-raising remarks. He was talking about a situation involving Episcopalian bishop Mariann Budde, who had urged then-President Trump toward compassion regarding LGBTQ+ issues. Howie ended up making a troubling connection between LGBTQ+ communities and pedophilia, which didn't sit well with many.

Even though Howie tried walking back his words, claiming they were out-of-context and aimed only at part 'TQ+' in LGBTQ+, it didn't help. The damage was already done, and people were not happy.

Public backlash and anti-advertising campaigns

Following Howie's remarks, over 71,000 people lodged complaints with Ofrom, UK's broadcasting regulator. The Good Law Project played a big role in voicing public discontent and anger over what was said.

At around that time, Stop Funding Hate, a campaign group with a mission, urged Marks & Spencer: pull your ads from GB News. They argue that what GB News stands by doesn't match Marks & Spencer's public commitment toward diversity and inclusivity.

More than 14,000 people have already signed their petition. They believe that by sticking with GB News, Marks & Spencer might inadvertently be supporting a network that's often criticized on issues involving migrants, Muslims, and LGBTQ+ communities.

Consumer reactions and brand ethics

Among those backing this petition, many have pledged not set foot in Marks & Spencer stores unless they stop advertising on GB News. Linda J, a customer, voiced her upset, "I thought Marks & Spencer was all about ethics, tolerance, and diversity. But their link with GB News makes me think twice."

Emma P, who identifies as part LGBTQ+ community, found this partnership particularly troubling. She shared, "As a queer individual, watching a brand like Marks & Spencer connect itself with GB News, knowing their viewings, it's gut-wrenching."

This whole debacle has got people reflecting on corporate responsibility in advertising. Shoppers are more conscious than ever about where their brands' loyalties lie and expect accountability when actions seem out-of-sync with stated values.

What's at stake in Marks & Spencer's marketing plan?

This issue challenges Marks & Spencer's advertising choices and ethical stance. They're at a point where they need balance between advertising benefits and ethical implications, all while keeping their customers in mind.

Overall, this has sparked broader discussions about broadcasters needing address respectful, inclusive content. GB News has come under fire before over segments seen as inflammatory or derogatory toward certain groups.

In a recent case, GB News presenter Michelle Dewberry faced criticism after making derogatory comments about transgender individuals, further cementing their controversial reputation.

As campaigns against Marks & Spencer's advertising decisions pick up steam, they've reached a pivotal juncture. How they respond could influence how brands match their marketing with their publicly-promoted values.
