Rutger published: Mark King: A Legacy of Joy and Resilience in the Face of HIV and Adversity

Mark King's journey through life is a testament to resilience and triumph. At 65 years old, King has lived through the hardest days of the HIV epidemic, facing personal loss and his own diagnosis at a time when effective treatments were not yet available. Despite these challenges, King reflects on his life with a sense of joy and defiance.

The Power of Joy

"My joy is a big f**k you to AIDS," King declares. It's his way of turning a painful history into a powerful narrative of survival and resistance. King emphasizes how humor and a positive outlook were crucial, even during the darkest days of the AIDS epidemic. Activism, he recalls, was often infused with humor, such as the memorable protest involving an enormous condom over Senator Jesse Helms' home.

Today, King remains a staunch advocate for the HIV community, speaking out against the unplugging of crisis hotlines and HIV prevention programs. "People will die," he warns, highlighting the ongoing necessity for activism and awareness.

A Fabulous Life

In 2003, King launched "My Fabulous Disease," a blog chronicling his life as an HIV-positive gay man overcoming addiction. The blog, now also a book, serves as a testament to his refusal to be defined by stigma. "I am f**king fabulous," he proclaims, determined to reshape how society perceives HIV.

King's advocacy and storytelling have earned him numerous accolades, including induction into the LGBTQ+ Journalist Hall of Fame. His work illustrates how the experiences of HIV-positive individuals offer invaluable lessons in resilience and empathy.

King aims to inspire the younger LGBTQ+ generation, encouraging them to fight for their rights while enjoying life. Despite the challenges, he insists that aging should not mean fading into the background. "We are your elders, you are our legacy," he tells young people, reminding them of the enduring strength and accomplishments of their predecessors.

Empathy Over Trauma

King is careful not to burden young people with tales of past traumas, instead focusing on using his experiences to foster empathy. "It takes generosity of spirit," he explains, to share experiences in a way that benefits others without dwelling on personal tragedy.

The lessons from the past, he argues, should empower today's queer youth instead of serving as a heavy reminder of what once was. He stresses the importance of activism that includes diverse voices, noting that today's movements are more representative of the entire community.

Looking Forward

Aware that he serves as a model for living with HIV long-term, King embraces his role. He celebrates life with milestones such as his 65th birthday, planned as a virtual fundraising event for The Reunion Project, which supports long-term HIV survivors.

King attributes his longevity to love, healthcare, and the occasional indulgence, advising others to "find joy in the next piece of cake" and maintain a sense of humor. His overarching message is one of communal support: "Help somebody else. Life can be scary, and we're here to make it a little less so for each other."

As King continues his advocacy and personal journey, he remains a beacon of hope and resilience for the LGBTQ+ community, demonstrating that joy and defiance can coexist with hardship.
