Marissa Bode Discusses Her Journey of Self-Discovery and Finding Love
Marissa Bode, a talented actress known for her role as Nessarose in the upcoming film adaptation of the beloved musical "Wicked," recently shared her personal journey of coming out and how she met her partner, Laura Brooks. This candid conversation reveals the challenges and triumphs she faced while embracing her identity and finding love.
At the age of 25, Marissa Bode has already made significant strides in the entertainment industry. She is the first disabled actress to portray Nessarose in a major production, breaking barriers and paving the way for more inclusive representation in film. In a recent interview, Bode opened up about her personal life, discussing her journey toward self-acceptance and the significance of coming out.
Marissa shared that coming out was something she had contemplated for several years. "I made it my New Year's resolution almost three years in a row," she explained. The decision to come out was not taken lightly, and it was a process that required patience and courage. "The last year leading up to it was particularly significant," she recalled. "I was post-high school and still in college. I was finally ready to embrace my true self and speak freely about who I am."
Marissa identifies as bisexual but prefers the term "queer." "I identify as bi, but I like to say 'queer' because I don't necessarily want to label it," she shared. For Marissa, coming out was about more than just revealing her sexual orientation; it was about living authentically and exploring every facet of her identity.
The timing of her coming out was intentional. "I felt ready when I came out during Pride Month. What better time?" she said with a smile. Pride Month provided Marissa with the perfect opportunity to express herself fully and honestly. "I wanted to explore dating women, but before that, I needed to be open with my family about it," she explained.
Marissa shared the humorous and heartfelt way she came out to her family: "I baked these little hand pies that were very dry and not good, and I made this little sign to go with them. It said, 'Roses are red. Have a hand pie. Happy Pride Month. Surprise, I’m bi.' Just a bit of poetry." This creative approach was not only memorable but also a way to infuse a moment of levity into an important revelation.
In addition to embracing her identity, Marissa found love in an unexpected place. She met her partner, Laura Brooks, on a dating app, proving that modern love stories can indeed have happy endings. "Shout-out to my girl, Hinge," Marissa laughed. "Not an ad, but it can be if Hinge would like me to. You don't always see success stories on the apps, but this was one. We met in 2023."
The timing of their meeting was serendipitous, occurring during a challenging time in the entertainment industry, amidst the actors' and writers' strike. Yet, Marissa found joy and companionship with Laura, marking a new chapter in her personal life.
Marissa Bode has also used her platform to advocate for greater representation and sensitivity towards disabled individuals in media. She has spoken out against "gross" jokes made about her character Nessarose's disability, reminding audiences that words can impact real people.
"It's important to remember that characters like Nessarose represent real disabled people," she asserted. Marissa's dedication to this cause is a testament to her commitment to fostering a more inclusive and empathetic entertainment landscape.
Marissa Bode's story is one of self-discovery, love, and advocacy. Her journey highlights the importance of embracing one's true self and finding joy in unexpected places. As she continues to break barriers and challenge stereotypes, Marissa is an inspiring figure for many in the LGBTQ+ community and beyond.
