The MARINA Fund: A ray of hope
Back in June, MARINA, a celebrated singer-songwriter, teamed up with PLUS1 and announced The MARINA Fund. The fund aims at channeling resources towards "community-led organizations" that focus on life-saving services, mental health care, and humanitarian assistance. This move underscores her commitment and passion towards making a positive change in LGBTQ+ young lives around the globe.
The official Instagram post from PLUS1 on August 27 confirmed that The Trevor Project, a leading LGBTQ+ mental health charity within the U.S., would receive primary benefits from this fund. This was a huge announcement, emphasizing their mission: making sure LGBTQ+ young people have free, 24/7 crisis support, peer networks, and advocacy whenever they need it.
Empowering communities through support
The MARINA Fund doesn't stop at just one initiative. It's all about empowering communities with "urgent relief" and "long-term health, education, and economic support," including support for regions such as Palestine. MARINA shows her dedication by pledgING a portion from her merchandise sales and $1 from every ticket sold during her upcoming The Princess of Power Tour, all going towards the fund.
MARINA, aka Marina Diamandis, has long been a vocal advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. In a heartfelt chat with PRIDE, she shared how her new album, "Princess of Power," celebrates her LGBTQ+ fans. She admires their strength, stating, "You're all here for a reason…to teach humanity." Championing LGBTQ+ rights
Not only does she fundraise and advocate, but MARINA also uses her voice to support policies protecting LGBTQ+ rights. In June, she joined big names like Pedro Pascal and Ariana Grande in signing an open letter by The Trevor Project. They urged the administration to safeguard around $50 million in federal funds for LGBTQ+ services via the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
Despite these efforts, the specialized services program was unfortunately closed by the administration in July, causing disappointment and concern. Jaymes Black, The Trevor Project's CEO, emphasized just how critical these services are, particularly as they had provided help to 1.5 million LGBTQ+ youth. He expressed, "Our country's federal government cut a literal lifeline. It is unfathomable."
The Trevor Project isn't backing down, though. They remain steadfast in their mission to offer vital, free, confidential crisis support, 24/7, for LGBTQ+ youth facing mental health issues.
