Back in 2017, when Marc VandeWettering interviewed with Coach Greg Gard about taking on a new role with Wisconsin Badgers as Director Of Basketball Operations, it wasn't what they talked about that stood out—it was what they didn't. Coach Gard focused entirely on Marc's skills and experience, something Marc later reflected on in a moving essay in 2021, coincidentally also when he publicly came out as gay.
"There was no asterisk by my name," Marc said. "It was just about whether I could do my job. I'm grateful he brought me back, and what a journey it has been! The support from everyone in our locker room has been incredible. For many, I might be their first encounter with an openly gay person, and it's been a valuable learning experience all around," Marc shared.
Marc has been a fantastic fit in his role, and his background speaks volumes—two years starting in high school basketball, a valedictorian, and a University Of Wisconsin alum. He worked his from student manager up through program assistant, with a detour at Big Ten, before landing in his current position.
Now in his eighth season with The Badgers, Marc's role has evolved—he's Chief Of Staff For Men's Basketball Operations and among a handful openly gay men in Division I men's sports. Notably, during an impressive 2024-25 season, The Badgers boasted a 26-9 record and landed a 3-seed in March Madness.
He has candidly discussed choosing when and how he came out, highlighting how vital visibility can be in sports. "I don't want anybody else feeling trapped in career limbo just because being openly gay in major college men's basketball isn't yet commonplace," he noted.
"I'm currently alone on this path as an openly gay man in a Division I men's college basketball staff, among 357 schools. That needs changing. Others are out there, but change begins when they know it's possible and safe here.
We all need a role in this—men's college basketball should welcome everyone. That includes closeted coaches, athletic trainers, directors, student-athletes, and my past self as a student manager. There's a barrier here that needs breaking, and I hope my writing helps," Marc explained.
In his powerful essay, Marc dives deep—discussing life in hiding, his fears and excitement stepping out, and tackling sports' often cliquish culture. The University Of Wisconsin spotlighted his story during Pride Month, showing how much it matters.
One striking part? His left-arm tattoo. It captures what matters most. “It features an equality symbol, with my family's voices saying ‘I love you' recorded in sound waves in one bar, and December 26, 2015, etched in Roman numerals below, marking when I came out. Scanning it, I hear their voices again. It's my little tradition each year on that date, bringing me true happiness."
Marc's journey showcases authenticity's power and representation's value in sports. His open presence isn't just inspiring—it's proof that creating inclusive environments benefits us all.
If you're curious about what he's up up, Marc shares more insights on Instagram. His story serves as a hopeful beacon, proving that acceptance and achievement in sports are reachable, no matter who you love.
By embracing diversity—especially in competitive sports—we're helping secure a brighter future. And by sharing his truth, Marc lights a path others can follow.
