Mara Wilson, an actress renowned for her lead role in the beloved 1996 film Matilda, has openly criticized former President Donald Trump’s assertion that he is safeguarding girls through policies that exclude transgender girls from school sports. Wilson’s comments highlight a perceived hypocrisy in Trump’s stance.
In a recent statement, Wilson expressed her disbelief at Trump’s claims, stating, “I know pointing out hypocrisy doesn’t matter anymore, but if there’s one person I wouldn’t trust to make judgments about who should be allowed in locker rooms, it would be someone who has openly bragged about walking into dressing rooms of underage girls.”
The actress was referencing comments made by Trump in 2005 during an appearance on Howard Stern’s radio show. At that time, Trump recounted his actions while he was the owner of the Miss USA pageant, where he claimed he would enter backstage areas where contestants were changing. “I’ll go backstage before a show and everyone’s getting dressed and ready and everything else,” Trump said. “And you know, no men are anywhere. And I’m allowed to go in because I’m the owner of the pageant.”
These remarks were corroborated by Tasha Dixon, a former Miss Arizona, who confirmed to CBS that Trump would enter dressing rooms during the pageant. “To have the owner come waltzing in, when we’re naked, or half-naked, in a very physically vulnerable position, and then to have the pressure of people telling us to go fawn all over him, talk to him, get his attention,” Dixon said, emphasizing that it seemed Trump leveraged his ownership to gain access to vulnerable women.
Despite these past behaviors, Trump recently positioned himself as a champion of women’s rights by signing an executive order that effectively bans transgender girls from participating in school sports. The order instructs the Department of Justice to take action against schools that allow trans girls to compete.
“It is the policy of the United States to rescind all funds from educational programs that deprive women and girls of fair athletic opportunities, which results in the endangerment, humiliation, and silencing of women and girls and deprives them of privacy,” the executive order states. This move has been seen by many as an attack on transgender rights under the guise of protecting women.
The language used by Trump and other conservatives has been criticized for co-opting feminist rhetoric to justify the rollback of transgender rights. Critics argue that while these actions purport to support women's rights, they ultimately serve to marginalize transgender individuals and ignore the broader implications of gender equality.
Conservative figures, such as Representative Nancy Mace, have been vocal in their opposition to transgender equality, sometimes using derogatory language in public forums. This opposition reflects a tension within conservative circles, where some support the exclusion of transgender individuals from certain spaces but do not necessarily support women’s rights.
Mara Wilson’s critique joins a broader chorus of voices calling for solidarity within the LGBTQ+ community and among allies. The actress’s comments serve as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality and the importance of holding public figures accountable for their words and actions.
In a climate where political decisions can have profound impacts on marginalized communities, it is crucial to remain vigilant and informed. Subscribing to newsletters and engaging with community insights can empower individuals to better understand and respond to the challenges facing the LGBTQ+ community.
