Rutger published: Manchester Arena Survivor Pays Tribute at Pride Parade

Michael Gunning, a well-known swimmer and survivor from that terrible night at Manchester Arena eight years ago, recently joined Manchester's Pride parade with a touching tribute. He wanted everyone there and beyond never forget those who suffered in that tragic event.

The bombing happened during an Ariana Grande concert in May 2017, where a suicide bomber took 22 lives and injured countless others as people were exiting. It was a night that left a scar on many hearts.

Honoring courage and identity

Gunning, who has made history as Jamaica's first openly gay athlete, was at that concert but, thankfully, came out unscathed. This harrowing experience was a turning point, pushing him towards living authentically. On August 23, he walked in Manchester Pride, commemorating those lost in that terrible attack.

A journey filled with healing and pride

As he reflected on everything, Gunning shared with I Love Manchester, “I've been waiting eight years. This'll be my first Pride march. Doing it here in Manchester, considering all that's happened, feels incredibly important. It's a chance not just  to remember those we lost but also celebrate how much I've grown.”

He continued, “Manchester has always been welcoming. From tributes after that night, anniversaries, and even strangers offering support, this city cares. I couldn't handle attending One Love benefit concert in June 2017, but I felt Manchester's spirit. This city knows togetherness.”

Gunning's presence highlights how Manchester pulls together as a community. The Pride parade itself shows how everybody's banded together, creating a place where people can be true themselves.

The unyielding spirit Manchester has

In response, Manchester emerged stronger and more united than ever. Through everything, this city knows how lean on each other, and Gunning's walk in Pride symbolizes that. It's more than just a celebration; it's a safe, loving, and diverse space.

As Gunning moved through that parade, he showed not only his personal bravery but also shared Manchester's big message—of acceptance and strength. His story inspires many who've faced tough paths, encouraging those still on their journey.

Candlelit vigil: Reflecting together

Although Pride weekend shines with celebration, it also holds space remembrance. On Monday, August 25, there will be a candlelit vigil from 9 pm at Sackville Gardens. Alongside George House Trust, this event's about coming together, honoring lives lost due HIV.

Starting at 7:30 pm, OutdoorLads, who support LGBTQ+ folks, will gather before heading over. Everyone's welcome, no Pride wristband needed.

Attendees can contribute by donating a little in exchange candles, which helps fund George House Trust—a charity offering key support those living HIV.

It offers community another chance unite, reflect, and support each other, reinforcing what makes Manchester Pride so special.

We'd love hear your thoughts and experiences. Drop comments below, and let keep this respectful, supportive conversation flowing.

This piece isn't just about sharing info—it's about inspiring people within and beyond LGBTQ+ community, highlighting unity's power and importance standing together when it matters most.
