In a case that's been closely watched by D.C.'s LGBTQ+ community, Jevaughn Mark, aka "Ledo," now faces 15 years in federal prison. The 33-year-old was behind a massive drug distribution network that tragically led two gay men, who fell victim due in part from fentanyl overdoses, with their untimely demise.
Three months ago, Mark confessed in court, owning up that he conspired and distributed huge amounts involving fentanyl and cocaine. He even unlawfully possessed a gun. By accepting a plea deal, Mark admitted his role in how his actions had led directly or indirectly, affecting lives like those belonging romantically speaking about Brandon Román plus Robert "Robbie" Barletta—two beloved individuals from this community. Judge Tanya S. Chutkan ordered an additional five years under supervision once Mark serves his time.
The prosecution team believed Mark's illicit dealings brought Román and Barletta's untimely end upon them. Initially seeking sterner consequences with a higher sentence around 210 months, they cited Mark's prior criminality and charges as heavy factors.
On December 27, 2023, Román (38) and Barletta (28) found themselves unresponsive at home found. Román got what he believed was ketamine from Mark, but DEA tests later showed it was a mix with fentanyl, xylazine, and caffeine.
During sentencing, Judge Chutkan expressed profound sadness, declaring, "There really isn't any good result here. These men shouldn't have died." Despite Mark's extensive criminal history, she decided down on reducing it, thinking he felt genuine regret—“I believe Mr. Mark regrets his choices,” she noted. But not everyone was happy—the prosecution wished stricter measures.
Jeanine Pirro, recently appointed as D.C.'s U.S. Attorney, spoke out afterward, wanting a tougher penalty, stating “We wanted more time," stressing his repeated crimes and how dangerous drugs such as fentanyl are. She also honored Román and Barletta, calling each "special remarkable beings."
Ibrar Mian, leading DEA Special Agent, echoed warnings about deadly drug mixes found illegally. "This illegal polydrug phenomenon, often mixed-fatally by including fentanyl primarily, represents an ever-growing threat,” he declared. He commended those who've cracked down on illegal drug circulation.
Pirro assured them that even amid substance use disorder risks, “The LGBTQ+ community gets fair treatment under law. Everyone has rights, which and this office'll protect always.”
This case shook D.C.'s community deeply, prompting friends/family honoring Román-Barletta. Rainbow ribbons adorned during their sentencing expressed both unity and remembering.
