Rutger published: Malta’s Eurovision Star Miriana Conte Opens Up About Her Queer Identity and Relationship

Miriana Conte, the charismatic artist set to represent Malta at the 2025 Eurovision Song Contest, recently shared a heartfelt revelation about her identity and personal life. Opening up to her fans and the public, Conte announced that she identifies as queer and is happily in a relationship with her girlfriend.

Conte has quickly gained popularity within the LGBTQ+ community, particularly among Eurovision enthusiasts. Her candid approach and vibrant personality have made her a standout figure as she prepares for the internationally renowned music competition.

Standing Out with "Serving"

Originally, Miriana planned to perform a song titled "Serving Kant," a playful nod to the Maltese word for "singing." However, due to restrictions imposed by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), she had to alter the song title to "Serving." This change was met with disappointment by Conte, but her spirit remains undeterred.

During a recent Instagram Live session, Miriana Conte and Finland’s Eurovision hopeful, Erika Vikman, delved into their preparations for the contest. They also shared intimate insights into their experiences within the queer community, highlighting the importance of authenticity and self-expression.

Embracing Queer Identity

Both artists expressed how the queer community offers a supportive and open-minded space where individuals can express themselves freely. "I think they support us the most because they get the perspective, they get the message we’re trying to send," Conte remarked during the session.

Erika Vikman, whose song "Ich komme" faced similar scrutiny from the EBU for perceived sexual connotations, emphasized the freedom found within queer spaces. "The queer community is so open-minded," Vikman stated. "You can express yourselves wildly with no limits and it’s accepted. So, that’s the healthiest community in the world."

Miriana echoed these sentiments, saying, "Same, but… I do have a girlfriend. I resonate with you. I don’t know exactly what I am, I don’t like to put a label on myself. I just fall in love with people for who they are, so we’re very much the same on this as well."

The Power of Connection

Both artists appreciate the connection and understanding they receive from their fans, attributing this to the shared experiences within the queer community. "Thank you for sharing, Erika, because I know sometimes it’s a bit difficult to talk about these things, the queer community is so free and open and you can be unapologetically yourself without explaining," Conte expressed.

Vikman concluded their discussion with a hopeful message: "Yes, you don’t have to be scared to show who you are and who you love, it’s such a free place. I hope that all people in the world will someday see how it feels to be inside the queer community because it’s a healthy place."

Their conversation underscores the importance of visibility and acceptance, particularly in spaces that celebrate diversity and creativity like Eurovision.

Looking Forward to Eurovision 2025

The upcoming Eurovision Song Contest promises to be an exciting event, with the semi-finals taking place on May 13 and 15, and the grand final scheduled for May 17 in Basel, Switzerland. Fans are eagerly anticipating Miriana Conte's performance, as she brings her unique style and message to the international stage.
