Comedian and actor Mae Martin has opened up about their deeply personal Netflix series, *Wayward*. This project has been a significant part in their creative journey, brewing in their mind over many years. Known both in comedy and television, Martin's new mini-series offers a heartfelt exploration that echoes their own life experiences and reflections.
The non-binary artist, recently branching out with music, calls *Wayward* "my lifelong passion project." The series unfolds at Tall Pines Academy, a fictional boarding school where troubled teens navigate complex relationships and internal struggles. Martin takes on Alex Dempsey, a police officer who moves with his pregnant wife, Laura (played by Sarah Gadon), meeting Evelyn, portrayed by Toni Collette. Evelyn's enigmatic hold over Tall Pines stirs a curious air in town.
Familiar as host from *Fluid: Life Beyond The Binary*, inspired by their gender fluidity exploration, Martin reveals this drama strikes a personal chord. At a Los Angeles screening filled with friends and collaborators, Martin shared how a childhood friend inspired this tale. As teens, Martin's friend was sent unnecessarily off, escaping an institution meant only as a troubled teen hold. Her gripping stories fuelled *Wayward*'s core.
Recalling this six-year journey from idea tin screen, Martin calls it a labor born from love. "It struck me deeply as a teen. My best friend was sent away—escaped after two years. Her tales left a mark, prodding questions toward systems judging our youth," Martin mused.
The series centers two best friends, Abbie (Sydney Topliffe) and Leila (Alyvia Alyn Lind), facing challenges from their convoluted lives and familial ties. Martin stressed scrutinizing societal labels on youth, often misconstruing natural responses in tumultuous worlds. The narrative asks viewers: Do these labels restrict young hearts?
"Young people are labeled, often because society misunderstands their natural reactions," Martin elaborated. "These labels too often shape self-worth and restrict what they can become."
Martin delves beyond surface themes, exploring intergenerational trauma—a lens through which we see what we pass down. They urge adults not suffocate empathy or critical thinking, which suffices as coping with societal norms but can be detrimental.
"We often stifle empathy maturing, conforming our minds as shaped by systems," Martin noted. "Our young need advocates—a spark from our inner rebellious past. Let's champion this energy, imagining a brighter path."
The series invites reflection on imagination's strength, urging audiences: Find courage challenging norms! Martin hints rekindling youthful rebellion may ignite transformations we seek.
*Wayward* arrives on Netflix September 25, weaving personal storylines with potent commentary on youth and society. It's poised both as a stirrer and an emotional draw.
