In a candid conversation on a podcast with author Jay Shetty, music icon Madonna opened up about one of the most challenging periods of her life. The 67-year-old 'Queen of Pop' spoke about the intense emotional distress she faced during her custody battle over her son Rocco, admitting that she "actually contemplated suicide" during that painful time.
Madonna, who rose to fame with hits like "Vogue," was married to filmmaker Guy Ritchie, known for directing "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels," in 2000. The couple welcomed their son Rocco in the same year. However, their marriage ended in divorce in 2008. By December 2015, Madonna found herself embroiled in a transatlantic legal struggle over Rocco's custody while she was in the midst of her Rebel Heart Tour.
"There were moments in my life I wanted to cut my arms off… I actually contemplated suicide," she shared with Shetty during the podcast. She described the custody battle as "one of the most painful moments" in her life, where she felt she "couldn’t see the forest through the trees" and often found herself sobbing on her dressing room floor.
The custody dispute began when Rocco, then 15, chose to stop traveling with Madonna on tour and decided to live with his father in London. This decision led to a public battle between Madonna and Ritchie over Rocco's living arrangements, with Madonna wanting him in New York and Ritchie preferring him to stay in London. After nine tumultuous months, they reached a custody agreement in September 2016, allowing Rocco to continue living in London with Ritchie.
Reflecting on that period, Madonna revealed the depth of her despair. "I really thought it was like it was the end of the world. I couldn’t take it. I just couldn’t take it," she confessed. The immense stress was compounded by her professional obligations to perform nightly for massive audiences.
Madonna credited her spirituality and the practice of Kabbalah, which she embraced in 1996, with helping her navigate her struggles. "As soon as you understand that what’s happening to you is a challenge, that you are karmically meant to experience and learn from and evolve to a higher level of consciousness," she explained, "then you can look at that event, that experience as a lesson and not punishment." This perspective allowed her to see her challenges as opportunities for growth rather than insurmountable hurdles.
Despite the difficulties of the past, Madonna and Rocco, now 25, have built a strong relationship. "We have a good relationship today," she shared, emphasizing the bond they have maintained over the years.
Madonna’s revelation highlights the importance of mental health awareness and the need for support during trying times. Her story serves as a reminder that even those who appear to have it all can experience profound struggles.
