Lush Cosmetics Advocates for Trans Rights with New Campaign
Lush Cosmetics has launched an ambitious campaign in collaboration with trans-led organizations TransActual and My Genderation, aiming to reinforce its commitment to trans visibility and rights. This initiative is particularly timely, following the UK Supreme Court's contentious ruling regarding the legal definition of women under the Equality Act 2010, which excluded transgender women.
The campaign is set to run from 23 April to 11 May across 101 Lush stores in the UK, featuring dazzling window displays, free educational booklets, and introducing a new product: the Liberation bath bomb, adorned in the trans Pride flag colors. The bath bomb, priced at £6, will see 75% of its proceeds directed to support TransActual and My Genderation.
Fox Fisher and Lewis Hancox, trans creatives behind the campaign, describe it as "a thrutopian vision," intending to provide a vivid path from our current circumstances to a future that celebrates inclusivity for all. This initiative not only highlights Lush's advocacy but also seeks to address ongoing challenges faced by the trans community.
The campaign's educational booklet, "Dream vs. Reality: Creating a World Where Trans People Are Safe," authored by TransActual, tackles pressing issues such as reduced healthcare access and increasing instances of hate crimes against trans individuals. Keyne Walker, Strategy Director at TransActual, stressed the importance of decisive action and vocal support for trans rights during this pivotal moment in the UK.
"With our legal rights in a state of uncertainty, it's crucial for LGBTQ+ individuals and allies to express their solidarity and champion the inclusion of trans people," said Walker. They expressed their satisfaction with partnering with Lush and My Genderation, noting that the campaign sends a clear message of resilience and hope for a better future.
Fisher and Hancox, the driving forces behind My Genderation and this initiative, emphasized the campaign's positive impact. "Championing trans lives through creativity and storytelling is a gentle yet powerful approach to changing hearts and minds," they shared. Reflecting on their own experiences, they noted how impactful such visible support would have been to their younger trans selves.
In conjunction with the campaign, Lush is implementing a Gender Affirming Care policy for all its employees in the UK and Ireland. This policy underscores Lush's dedication to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace environment, demonstrating ongoing support for trans, non-binary, and gender-diverse staff.
This campaign represents a marked shift from Lush's previous controversies, including a 2020 incident where the company faced backlash for donating to an anti-trans group. Since then, Lush has apologized and committed to being a positive force for change within the LGBTQ+ community.
As the campaign unfolds, Lush is set to make a significant impact not just through its financial contributions but also by fostering an environment of acceptance and understanding across its platforms.
This initiative is more than a marketing strategy; it's a bold statement that aligns with Lush's core values and acknowledges past missteps while striving for a more inclusive future. The campaign's message is clear: trans rights are human rights, and everyone deserves to feel seen, heard, and supported.
