Rutger published: Lush Co-Founder Proudly Embraces Activism, Stands Firm on Inclusion

Mark Constantine, co-founder of the well-loved cosmetics retailer Lush, has proudly embraced the label of being "woke" and has a clear message for those who don't align with his values: stay away from his shops.

Lush, founded in 1994 by Constantine and his wife Mo, has long been a champion for LGBTQ+ rights and environmental causes. The brand's commitment to social justice is unwavering, as demonstrated by their recent actions in support of the trans community. Following a contentious Supreme Court decision, Lush collaborated with trans-led organizations TransActual and My Genderation to launch a campaign reinforcing their support for trans rights and visibility.

Earlier this year, Lush made a principled decision to terminate its partnership with Download Festival after the event announced it would enforce single-sex spaces based on "biological sex". Constantine's message to those who disagree with their socially conscious business practices is simple: "They shouldn't come in my shop."

This stance comes at a time when many businesses are retreating from activism amid political pressures. In the U.S., under the influence of former President Trump and supporters like Robby Starbuck, policies promoting diversity, equality, and inclusion (DEI) have been rolled back. This has led to major brands like Target, Walmart, Ford, Lowe’s, Harley-Davidson, and Jack Daniel’s stepping back from their DEI commitments.

The impact of these changes is being felt globally. Recently, Jerry Greenfield, co-founder of Ben & Jerry’s, announced his departure from the company he helped build, citing a stifling of the brand’s activist voice by its parent company, Unilever. Known for advocating social issues such as LGBTQ+ rights, racial justice, and climate activism, Greenfield expressed that the company's ability to stand up for "justice, equity, and our shared humanity" had been severely restricted.

"Standing up for your values is easy when there’s no risk involved. The true test is when you face challenges and potential losses," Greenfield stated in his resignation. In response to Greenfield’s comments, Constantine suggested that if founders sell their companies, they can’t expect the new owners to continue their vision. He remarked, "What should Ben and Jerry have done? They should never have sold."

Ben Cohen, the other co-founder of Ben & Jerry's, expressed his admiration for Lush’s dedication to their values. "I have a huge appreciation for Lush, their values, and how they use their voice to advocate for those values," Cohen said.

Lush's commitment to advocacy is part of a broader movement where businesses leverage their influence for social good. While some companies face backlash, others like Lush continue to stand firm, recognizing the importance of using their platforms to champion justice.

As the landscape of corporate activism evolves, businesses are faced with the decision to either embrace these values or retreat. For Lush, the choice is clear. Constantine’s message is a testament to the brand's ethos: "I like being woke," he confidently asserts. In a world where many are silenced, Lush's voice remains strong, committed to standing up for what they believe is right.

The challenges faced by brands like Lush and Ben & Jerry's highlight the complex dynamics between corporate ownership and social responsibility. As more companies navigate this terrain, the importance of maintaining integrity and a clear voice becomes ever more critical.

Through their actions, Lush exemplifies how businesses can act as catalysts for change, inspiring others to follow suit. Their dedication to inclusion and advocacy sets a powerful example, encouraging a future where corporate values align with social justice.

As Constantine continues to lead Lush with his unwavering commitment to these principles, the brand remains a beacon of hope and progress in a world often fraught with division. Their message is one of courage and conviction, promoting a vision of a more inclusive and equitable future for all.

For those who share these ideals, Lush's stores are more than just places to buy cosmetics; they are a testament to the power of standing up for what is right, regardless of the challenges that may arise.
