LuLu's journey from pounding beneath Friday night lights as a high school football player, all through his reinvention as a burlesque performer, reads like a storybook adventure in resilience and self-discovery. Growing up wasn't easy, with a military dad frequently overseas and a mom who wasn't around much. But on that football field, LuLu found a sanctuary—a place where chaos couldn't touch him. As an unwavering offensive tackle, LuLu shielded his quarterback and, in a sense, found protection from his own life struggles.
"Family life? Not much going on there," LuLu admits. "But sports? That was my escape, a positive outlet. I'd look forward each day, itching just a little more, ready eager, ready. Football had my heart." It was here that LuLu didn't just build his body but also lifelong friendships and that elusive sense—belonging.
When high school coaches suggested LuLu bulk up with another 50 pounds, he made a decision he wouldn't soon regret: stepping away from football. Instead, he found himself under Arizona's sprawling skies, discovering rowing's rhythm and muscle. A crazy transition in such a dry place, right? But this choice paved his path. "The discipline I got from football? It stuck. Became my guiding star," he reflects. This new chapter on water led him straight onto a state championship-winning team.
His love affair with football never truly ended, though. Supporting his favorite team, LuLu became an avid New Orleans Saints fan, sharing NFL Sundays with his grandmother—a cherished connection that peaked during that unforgettable Super Bowl XLIV victory.
The adrenaline rush from football lingered, but a new interest began coaxing. It was during a Phoenix ballroom event that LuLu stumbled upon burlesque, urged by friends and entirely out on a limb as a "butch queen in heels." He didn't snag first place, yet that night sparked a flame. "I never knew I had it in me, but I did. The experience was a wave, freeing and wild," LuLu shares.
Blending sports discipline with performance art, LuLu embraced this unexpected passion. In burlesque, he found a vibrant canvas, a stage where both his masculine and feminine sides could paint vivid pictures. The rigorous training paralleled his sports foundation, allowing him room and confidence enough, that he could shine under new lights.
"Performing? It's my duality expressed," he explains. "It feels real, feels right—it's exactly my path." The athlete's rigor he brings, paired with ballet skills he'd once been steered from, makes this transition seem natural, even when it shouldn't.
Under Cleodoraa's mentorship, his "burlesque mom," LuLu's transformation gained momentum. She saw past his lack in formal training, straight through him. "She taught me everything," LuLu says with genuine gratitude.
Now, LuLu stands as a testament: self-expression and resilience, wrapped in burlesque's allure. "It's about embracing yourself, that complexity—masculine, feminine, whatever it may be," LuLu reflects. "Sports shaped me, but burlesque allows me." Acknowledgment, pride—they accompany his journey from then til now.
Sports remain close, a comforting constant amid life's rocky patches. "They got me through tough times," he acknowledges, "and taught me something about dedication. They've been my raft against depression's tides."
