Currently playing for the Milwaukee Admirals in the American Hockey League (AHL)—the league just one step below the National Hockey League (NHL)—Prokop scored his first goal for the Admirals, marking a significant personal and historical achievement.
Last season, Prokop was on the ice for nine games with the Admirals. He spent a significant portion of the season with the Atlanta Gladiators in the ECHL, where he showcased his scoring prowess. However, this goal was his first in the AHL with the Admirals, marking a memorable moment in his career.

Prokop recently spoke about the significance of Pride Nights, reflecting on his personal experiences with them. “I’ve been blessed to play in two of them for my home teams as a junior, and I got to play in one this year on the road,” he shared. “Seeing the way my teammates kind of react to it, you know that they realize that it has a big impact on fans.”
His teammates' support underscores the importance of these events—not just for celebrating diversity, but for fostering inclusivity within sports. “Some of them have even told me that it’s the game with the most meaning – not a championship game, but kind of outside of hockey, has the most meaning. So it’s cool to see my teammates kind of rally around it as well.”
Challenges and Progress in the NHL
In 2023, the NHL faced challenges regarding the display of Pride gear and the hosting of Pride Nights, with restrictions placed by Commissioner Gary Bettman on players wearing Pride-themed gear during games. Despite these challenges, many teams have continued to champion LGBTQ+ inclusion, demonstrating a commitment to progress.
The Admirals, like many other teams, have persisted in their efforts to support the LGBTQ+ community, hosting Pride Nights and fostering an environment of acceptance and inclusivity.
Prokop made history when he came out publicly as a Nashville Predators draftee in 2021, becoming the first player to do so in a major professional hockey league. Drafted in the third round of the 2020 NHL Draft by the Predators, his courage and openness have paved the way for other athletes.
Since his public coming out, Prokop has played on several teams, and he's encountered overwhelming support from players and coaches alike. “Players and coaches don’t care if another player is gay. While there may be an exception here or there, they’ll deal with it,” Prokop said, illustrating the growing acceptance within the sport.
The hope remains that Prokop will soon fulfill his dream of playing in the NHL, breaking a long-standing barrier and setting a precedent for future generations of LGBTQ+ athletes.
