I recently experienced a setback when I was removed from a speaking engagement for LGBTQ+ History Month with a corporate Pride group. The presentation was meant to be a brief 15-minute talk on the significance of history months, particularly LGBTQ+ History Month, followed by a Q&A session. Everything was set to go ahead until I received a message from the group saying the event was canceled.
The reason? A comment I made about a controversial political figure, Charlie Kirk, had surfaced. This response was based on an essay I wrote following Kirk’s murder, where I expressed my sorrow for his family and condemned all forms of violence, including the American obsession with guns. Despite this, the decision-makers deemed my comments inappropriate, and I was deemed unfit to speak at their event.
In the essay, I pointed out that Kirk, like everyone, was flawed and had propagated some harmful views. His organization had even previously listed me on their watchlist for so-called 'woke' professors. Nonetheless, my discussion of these truths made me incompatible with their company, even in a minor, virtual role.
My story is small in the grand scheme of things, but it reflects a troubling trend of censorship and suppression. Others have faced harsher consequences for speaking their minds. Matthew Dowd, a political commentator, lost his job at MSNBC for not choosing the 'right' words on air. Similar fates befell reporters, writers, educators, and officials across the country.
A sheriff's deputy in Missouri faced such harassment over her remarks that she had to leave her home in Salem. This mirrors a wider pattern where those who do not align with a certain political orthodoxy are targeted and silenced. Government officials, like the governor of Florida, have explicitly warned against dissent in educational and public spaces.
Even a month after Kirk's death, the Texas Education Agency is investigating nearly 300 teachers over their social media comments. While I may not agree with every statement made, I staunchly defend their right to free speech free from corporate and governmental interference.
Initially, I had no intention of making my experience public. However, upon reflection, the irony became too glaring to ignore. It’s baffling that someone who was once listed as a 'bad teacher' for being outspoken is now penalized for those same views, especially when I am also the founder of LGBTQ+ History Month.
Meanwhile, influential figures, particularly those associated with reactionary forces in the U.S., continue to spread divisive and derogatory rhetoric without consequence. They consistently belittle those who refuse to fall in line and attempt to erase diverse histories and experiences.
The irony is that those who champion the unfiltered speech of such leaders are often the first to demand silence from those with opposing views. It's a perplexing double standard that defines our current societal landscape.
To all facing similar challenges, remember that while the voices of the few may be loud, they do not represent the entirety of our communities. It's essential to continue advocating for free expression and resisting censorship, whether it stems from government, corporate interests, or societal pressure.
I will continue to support the Pride group who I believe were caught in a complicated situation not of their own making. But it’s important to shed light on the broader implications of such incidents on free speech and the LGBTQ+ community's fight for recognition and equality.
Rodney Wilson, the founder of LGBTQ+ History Month, remains committed to teaching history and fostering understanding. His story, like many others, is a reminder of the ongoing struggle for rights and freedoms in a world that often challenges them.
