Beloved music director's firing sparks outrage in Michigan church

In a close-knit Michigan community, emotions are running high after St. Francis Catholic Church in Traverse City dismissed its beloved music director, Fred Szczepanski, often fondly called "Mr. Fred." Szczepanski, whose dedication spanned 35 years, lost his position due, reportedly, because he married his same-sex partner in Nevada four years ago. This decision has left many parishioners stunned and upset.

Community rallies in protest

In no time, St. Francis' congregants gathered together, united in their outrage over what they perceive as an unfair decision that contradicts their core beliefs in love and unity. Outside, members waved signs with messages like "Love Not Hate" and "God Includes, Not Excludes," making their feelings crystal clear.

The church choir, where Szczepanski made a lasting impact, took a bold stand by dressing in black and opting not only not performing at a recent service. Robert DeGabriele, a choir member and cantor, voiced what many were thinking: "You can tell by our reaction, we're not taking it lying down."

For many, Szczepanski was a shining light, more than just someone who led music. Bob Holden, a fellow choir member, expressed his frustration, saying, "He got fired because he's gay. He's extremely talented; I look forward every week just because he's there."

Church leadership faces criticism

The decision came from Rev. Michael Lingaur, who recently took over as parish administrator. Some churchgoers are directing their frustration toward him, believing his recent arrival may have influenced this course. Congregant Liz Yarch called his action "cruel," holding him responsible.

The Diocese overseeing St. Francis, meanwhile, has remained tight-lipped, citing confidentiality regarding staff matters. This silence from higher authorities, including Bishop Jeffrey Walsh, has left many feeling abandoned by an institution they once dearly loved.

Debate over unequal treatment

Parishioners are also pointing out what they see as a double standard in how cases are dealt with. Consider Rev. Don Geyman, a former leader involved in serious misconduct allegations—he was merely moved elsewhere, while Szczepanski was fired over his marriage.

Choir member Sherry Koenig didn't hold back, describing it as "despicable.” She praised Szczepanski as being "kind, honorable, and caring," fueling demands that justice and reconciliation take center stage in this ongoing saga.

Support and future actions unfold

While Fred Szczepanski hasn't made any legal decisions yet, his supporters are rallying significantly. A GoFundMe campaign, launched primarily around his insurance needs and possible legal expenses, has already amassed close-to $52,000—underscoring deep community support.

As this scenario continues evolving, it draws attention back toward LGBTQ+ inclusion within religious settings. What has unfolded at St. Francis Church not only highlights ongoing challenges but also stresses a need—now more than ever—for authentic conversations and tangible change.
