Rutger published: Liz Truss Advocates for Radical Political Shift at Conservative Conference

In a polarizing speech at the recent Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) held in Maryland, former UK Prime Minister Liz Truss expressed her belief that the United Kingdom is on a troubling path and requires a movement similar to the MAGA phenomenon in the United States to reverse its course.

Truss, who served as Prime Minister for a brief period in 2022, addressed the audience on Wednesday, February 19th, highlighting what she perceives as significant issues within the UK's political and judicial systems. "We now have a major problem in Britain," Truss declared, "where judges are making decisions that should be made by elected politicians."

Critique of the Judiciary and Bureaucracy

During her speech, Truss was critical of the judiciary and what she described as an "unelected bureaucracy" that, she claims, was empowered by former Prime Minister Tony Blair. This shift, according to Truss, has led to a situation where the judiciary is no longer accountable to the public. "There’s no doubt in my mind," she stated, "that until those changes are reversed, we do not have a functioning country."

Her remarks indicate a concern with the current state of the British government, suggesting that key decisions are not being made by elected officials but rather by what she termed the "deep state" — a term often used by right-wing figures to describe perceived entrenched bureaucratic power.

A Call for Political Realignment

Truss expressed her hope for a British movement akin to the MAGA movement in the United States, which she believes could lead to the desired political realignment. "What I hope to see is a movement like you have in the US with MAGA, with CPAC, with all these organizations, that ultimately pushes change we all want," she said, advocating for the establishment of a "British CPAC."

CPAC is an annual event attended by conservative leaders and activists from across the globe, known for its influential role in shaping conservative policies and strategies. This year’s conference featured prominent speakers, including U.S. Vice President JD Vance and former President Donald Trump, who was scheduled to speak on Saturday.

Past Controversies and Future Ambitions

This appearance was not Truss's first at CPAC. Previously, she had stirred controversy with statements about the UK civil service, accusing it of being infiltrated by "trans activists" and "environmental extremists." Her comments were met with backlash, particularly from LGBTQ+ rights groups, given her previous admission of regretting her claims of being an LGBTQ+ ally.

In addition to her CPAC appearances, Truss has been active in promoting the Popular Conservatism ('PopCon') movement, a faction of the Conservative Party that she leads. At a recent launch event, she once again drew criticism by labeling supporters of LGBTQ+ rights as "left-wing extremists."

Despite losing her seat in the 2024 general election, Truss remains a vocal figure on the conservative political scene, with ambitions of influencing the future direction of the UK's Conservative Party.

Truss's call for a radical shift in the UK’s political landscape is likely to resonate with parts of the conservative base, yet it also risks alienating more moderate elements within her party and the broader public. As the UK navigates its post-Brexit identity and grapples with challenges on multiple fronts, the discourse around its future governance continues to be a contentious topic.
