Lately, Lil Nas X and his dad have gotten real about his recent run-in with law enforcement, which they say stems from a mental "breakdown." It all went down late at night on August 21 in downtown Los Angeles. Lil Nas X, whose real name's Montero Lamar Hill, allegedly ended up in an altercation with a police officer while strolling around in just boots and briefs.
So now, our Grammy-winning star has said he's not guilty on four felony counts tied up with this incident. After they took him in, he sat in custody until August 25 when he managed his release on a $75,000 bail.
L il Nas X's dad, Robert Stafford, didn't hold back when talking about seeing his son behind bars. "Walking in and seeing him through that glass, I just lost it," Stafford said. "We cried together, and I told him, 'Getting overwhelmed happens, but yours just plays out in public.'"
Robert stressed how much pressure his son shoulders. "He's just 26 and has so many people counting on him. When you throw in trying help his mom, who's dealing with homelessness, mental health, and addiction, it's a lot on anyone."
Despite all this, Stafford's hopeful that this might be a "turning point" in handling Lil Nas X's mental health. He talked about how his son felt sorry and took responsibility even as things were unfolding.
Speaking with media, Stafford has reassured fans that Lil Nas X remains in "good spirits," feeling "very remorseful," and eager seek appropriate help. He also squashed any gossip about drugs, saying, "This had nothing do with substances."
After getting out, Lil Nas X hit up his fans on Instagram on August 26. In a candid video, he got real: "Listen, your girl's gonna be fine, boo. Everything's gonna be okay," while reflecting on those "terrifying last four days" and promising recovery.
His lawyer, Drew Findling, emphasized that this was a first-time issue. "He's never been in trouble before. We're not letting one hiccup mess up his future," he said. Next step? Court on September 15.
