The power of collaboration between professional football teams and their LGBTQ fan groups was prominently highlighted in a recent decision by the English football authorities.
In September 2024, during a high-profile Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, a segment of Tottenham fans was heard chanting anti-gay slurs on two separate occasions. The match, broadcast live worldwide, saw Spurs claim a 3-0 victory. Unfortunately, the celebratory atmosphere was marred by discriminatory chants directed at former Chelsea player Mason Mount, as well as a derogatory chant aimed at Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta after Spurs' third goal.
In the aftermath, Tottenham Hotspur swiftly issued a statement denouncing the "abhorrent homophobic chanting" and pledged to collaborate with law enforcement and match officials to identify those involved.
Following standard procedures, the Football Association (FA) charged Tottenham with misconduct, citing the club's failure to control its supporters. Spurs admitted to the charge, reflecting a wider trend in recent seasons where several clubs faced similar accusations.
For context, other clubs have faced similar penalties. In 2023, Wolverhampton Wanderers were fined £100,000 for fans' use of homophobic chants during a match against Chelsea. Leeds United faced a £150,000 fine after a similar incident against Brighton, while Luton Town was fined £120,000 for the same charge later that year. Instances of such behavior extend beyond the Premier League, with fines also imposed on clubs like Accrington and Preston, and Millwall awaiting a verdict.
Last month, West Ham United was fined £120,000 for fans chanting homophobic slurs during a match against Chelsea, underscoring a broader issue within English football.
During its disciplinary hearing, Tottenham emphasized its proactive measures both before and after the Manchester United match, urging the regulatory commission to consider these actions. The club highlighted its collaboration with Proud Lilywhites, an official LGBTQ and allies supporters group, as a key aspect of their defense.
The Proud Lilywhites, established in 2014, is one of the longest-standing organizations of its kind and has been recognized with awards from groups like the Football Supporters’ Association and Football v Homophobia.
However, the commission initially determined that Spurs had not taken all reasonable steps to prevent the incident and imposed a £150,000 fine along with an action plan.
Tottenham appealed the decision, arguing that their culpability was inaccurately assessed as "medium" rather than "low." The club cited their ongoing work with Proud Lilywhites, which includes fan education and steward briefings, as evidence of their commitment to combating discrimination. The appeal board found these arguments persuasive, acknowledging the club's efforts and reducing the fine to £75,000.
The Proud Lilywhites issued a statement following the appeal verdict, expressing pride in their collaboration with Spurs to combat homophobia, transphobia, and all forms of discrimination. They welcomed the appeal board's recognition of their efforts.
While stricter penalties for homophobic chanting seem to be deterring such behavior, reports of anti-gay incidents at matches remain a concern. In the 2023/24 season, anti-LGBTQ discrimination was reported in 4% of all men's professional matches.
The ongoing work by clubs like Tottenham Hotspur, in partnership with LGBTQ supporters, highlights the importance of collective action in addressing discrimination in sports. Together, they strive to create an inclusive environment for all fans, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
