A Community United: LGBTQ+ Ice Cream Shop Overcomes Arson Attacks

An individual is in custody following two back-to-back Molotov cocktail attacks on a LGBTQ+-owned ice cream shop in Minneapolis. Despite the frightening incidents, the owner remains resolute, refusing to let the attacks diminish the shop's vibrant presence in the community.

Fletcher’s Ice Cream and Cafe, a well-loved establishment in Minneapolis known for its welcoming atmosphere and prominent display of a large Pride flag, found itself under attack in a matter of 24 hours. The shop, which has become a beacon of inclusivity in the area, narrowly escaped severe damage thanks to quick action from neighboring businesses.

The suspect, identified as Firomsa Ahmed Umar, 30, allegedly targeted the shop with incendiary devices on the evenings of October 19 and 20. Fortunately, the shop was closed during both attacks. On the first occasion, employees had left the premises just minutes before the attack, which resulted in some minor fire damage to the furniture. In the second incident, the device failed to ignite the store, thanks in part to the quick response from the community.

Community members and neighbors of Fletcher’s Ice Cream have rallied in support, organizing a show of solidarity to emphasize their stand against such acts of intimidation. The local community's response highlights their commitment to supporting queer-owned businesses and standing against hate-driven acts.

Shop owner Jason Fletcher expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support from the community. "Minneapolis is a city with a big heart, and this incident has shown me just how much love and support there is," Fletcher said. "The level of support has been incredible, and it strengthens my resolve to continue being an open and proud member of the community."

Fletcher believes that the attacks provide an opportunity to spread messages of love and peace. "I'm not going to be in hiding, and I don't think any business that is queer-owned should be," he stated. "It's vital that we stand up for ourselves and continue to be visible."

The authorities have charged Umar with two counts of first-degree arson. Due to the shop's proximity to residential buildings, these charges could carry more severe penalties. While the motive behind the attacks remains unconfirmed, the community and Fletcher are cautious not to jump to conclusions.

City Council Member Jason Chavez took to social media to denounce the attacks, underscoring the importance of standing with marginalized communities. "In times like these, when marginalized communities face increased threats, it's crucial for us as a city to condemn such acts and reaffirm our commitment to equality and safety for all LGBTQIA+ residents," Chavez remarked.

Fletcher remains hopeful that the attacks were not solely due to the shop's vibrant display of LGBTQ+ pride. "While the obvious conclusion might be drawn from our flag, I choose to believe that people appreciate the inclusive environment we strive to create," said Fletcher. "Our mission is to support everyone, and incidents like these will not deter us from that vision."

As the investigation continues, Fletcher's Ice Cream remains open, serving as a testament to the resilience and strength of the community. The rally planned by neighbors is not only a show of support but also a reminder that hate will not prevail over love and acceptance.
