The effort to establish an official historical marker commemorating the Rainbow Lounge, a significant site for the LGBTQ+ community in Fort Worth, Texas, has been blocked by Tarrant County Judge Tim O’Hare. The Rainbow Lounge was the site of a notorious police raid in 2009 that became a pivotal moment for LGBTQ+ rights in the area.
Situated at 651 S. Jennings Avenue, the Rainbow Lounge opened its doors to the public in June 2009. However, it quickly became the center of controversy when Fort Worth police and agents from the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission conducted an unexpected raid on June 28, 2009. The authorities used excessive force during the raid, arresting patrons for alleged public intoxication. The violence of the raid led to one patron suffering brain bleeding and another enduring broken ribs.
The Raid and Its Aftermath
The raid occurred on the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, a landmark event in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. It galvanized the Dallas-Fort Worth LGBTQ+ community, drawing national attention to the incident. In the wake of the raid, there were significant reforms in Fort Worth, including changes to anti-discrimination laws and the introduction of diversity training for local officials.
Sadly, in June 2017, the Rainbow Lounge was destroyed by a fire, and the cause was never officially determined. The site remains abandoned due to leasing issues preventing reconstruction. Despite the physical absence of the bar, its legacy continues to influence Fort Worth's LGBTQ+ community.
Push for Recognition
Todd Camp, who leads the Fort Worth LGBTQ+ history group Yesterqueer, advocated for a historical marker to honor the Rainbow Lounge. Following a presentation on local queer history, city officials approved the idea. However, the proposal hit a roadblock when Judge Tim O’Hare intervened.
According to Judge O’Hare, the application for the historical marker did not adhere to the Tarrant County Historical Commission's approval process. He claimed that the process bypassed established procedures. Former Tarrant County Historical Commission chair Coletta Strickland refuted these claims, stating that everything about the application was standard and aboveboard.
In his letter opposing the marker, O’Hare expressed concern about the "unnecessary controversy" it might generate. While the letter did not explicitly attack the LGBTQ+ community, comments from his staff indicated his stance. His chief of staff, Ruth Ray, mentioned that O’Hare does not support a marker that might promote "radical gender ideology" or "drag performances."
Context and Controversy
Judge O’Hare is known for his opposition to LGBTQ+ rights and has a history of promoting far-right political views. His actions as Tarrant County judge include efforts to cut funding to non-profits aligned with views on racial inequality and LGBTQ+ rights.
Texas is home to over 16,000 historical markers, celebrating a wide range of historical sites, from schools to mansions and sites significant to Black history. Despite this impressive number, Texas only has one officially recognized LGBTQ+ historical marker: "The Crossroads" in Dallas’s Oak Lawn neighborhood.
The struggle to commemorate the Rainbow Lounge underscores the challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community in securing recognition for their historical contributions. The denial of the marker by Judge O’Hare reflects broader societal debates about LGBTQ+ rights and the representation of diverse histories.
As the community continues to seek recognition for its history and contributions, the case of the Rainbow Lounge remains a poignant reminder of the ongoing fight for equality and representation.
