The Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce is considering legal action against the Trump administration following an incident that forced the relocation of their annual event last week. The chamber had planned to hold its second annual Thrive Small Business Summit & Matchmaker at the Federal Reserve Bank of Houston. However, due to an executive order issued by Trump banning diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, the event had to be moved at the last minute.
The executive order, which is said to violate constitutional rights to free speech, has caused significant disruptions. The chamber was informed less than 30 hours before the event that it could no longer proceed in its original location. The Federal Reserve Bank of Houston, citing compliance with the executive order, expressed regret over the sudden change. "Our operating understanding was that the Thrive event was permissible because of its business and economic development focus," read the bank's communication to the chamber. Despite their planning, they had to urgently find a new venue.
The event was successfully relocated to the Hilton Garden Inn/Home 2 Suites Medical Center. Over 130 small business owners and representatives from support organizations, LGBTQ+ employee resource groups, and supplier diversity professionals gathered there. The event featured panels, breakout sessions, and a matchmaking opportunity to foster connections among attendees.
The chamber's co-founder, president, and CEO, Tammi Wallace, announced that the organization might pursue legal action, claiming that the administration's actions infringe on their First Amendment rights. This move comes as several LGBTQ+ organizations, including Lambda Legal and the Southern Poverty Law Center, criticize the executive order and consider similar legal responses.
Camilla Taylor, deputy legal director for litigation at Lambda Legal, remarked on the flawed nature of Trump's anti-DEI order, comparing it to previous contested directives. "Trump's order attempts to ban DEI without defining it, imposing a sort of Orwellian trolling on those addressing bias," Taylor commented.
Wallace, who co-founded the Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce in 2016 to address the lack of LGBTQ+ business representation, is determined to continue advocating for diverse business communities. The chamber has become a crucial part of the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce and is one of four such organizations in Texas, alongside those in Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, and San Antonio.
"These executive orders are hurting diverse communities," Wallace stated. "It brings up the trauma and pain we experience as a community, just because of who we are and who we love." She emphasized the importance of diverse businesses in strengthening the overall economic fabric. "When diverse business owners succeed, we all succeed, and our economy wins," she added.
The Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce continues to stand firm in its mission to support and uplift LGBTQ+ businesses and professionals. As they explore legal avenues, the chamber remains committed to representing their members' interests and ensuring that their voices are heard in the face of policies that threaten their rights.
