Rutger published: LGBTQ+ Allies Use Kazoos to Promote Love and Drown Out Hate in Seattle

What a sight it was in Seattle last weekend when about 200 LGBTQ+ allies gathered with an upbeat mission. They came armed not with anger, but with kazoos and an infectious spirit, ready not just as a counteract, but as a beacon against an anti-LGBTQ+ preacher's rally. Tunes like "Pink Pony Club" by Chappell Roan filled Gas Works Park, turning negativity on its head with sheer joy and unity.

Standing up with love and acceptance

Welcome "Kazoo Karaoke," a vibrant response crafted precisely against Sean Feucht's "Revive in '25" rally. Feucht, a Christian Nationalist known all too well in circles opposing LGBTQ+ rights, sparked controversy with claims that LGBTQ+ advocacy threatens culture. But rather than confront his divisiveness with more division, these allies chose a different path—one where music, not malice, led their resistance.

This joyful protest wasn't accidental. The organizers, like Rae, knew exactly what they were doing: "The point was not just reaction," Rae pointed out, "but transformation." By filling a potentially hostile atmosphere with songs and smiles, they reminded everyone present and watching from afar that this was about celebrating who they are, not attacking others.

Community celebration through joyful protest

James Watkins, out there with his kazoo in hand, captured it perfectly: "We built this around joy," he said. For him and many others, it was about preserving a space where everyone could feel free and connected, supporting one another at this colorful gathering. The atmosphere brimmed with pride flags and infectious tunes, drawing smiles and media lenses alike, clearly showing that contrast between love and hate couldn't have been more stark—or powerful.

Ensuring a peaceful protest environment

Thanks in part go out here, too, as local law enforcement made sure everyone stayed safe amid this ideological standoff. No arrests, just two sides presenting their voices peacefully. It's a testament, really, that even with such opposing views, dialogue—or in this case, melodies—can prevail without chaos.

While Feucht's rhetoric continued, it was those kazoos that truly stole center stage, playing their part in a resistance molded from creativity and warmth. Participants left knowing they'd pushed back against intolerance through positivity, embodying love and acceptance in real, tangible ways.

Empowering through creative and peaceful protest

"Kazoo Karaoke" now stands as a shining example: protest doesn't always have fists in air; it can be joyous, inclusive, and still, deeply effective. By choosing music over outrage, they united a community, showing how impactful creative solidarity can be.

Seattle's gathering lights a path forward, encouraging others facing similar battles. It emphasizes that even amid adversity, peace can resonate louder than anger. This isn't just about amplifying LGBTQ+ voices; it's about celebrating humanity's diversity and strength. As those kazoo notes hung on in Seattle's air, their echo—love, acceptance, unity—made something clear: there's a peaceful, powerful road in standing up, and it sings.
