Rutger published: LGBTQ+ Advocates Rally After Attack on Two Trans Women at Minneapolis Station

In a concerning incident highlighting ongoing challenges for the transgender community, two transgender women were assaulted at a light rail station in downtown Minneapolis, an event that has sparked outrage and a call to action within LGBTQ+ circles.

The altercation occurred on November 10, when the women, identified only as Dahlia and Jess, were subjected to derogatory remarks by a group of individuals. Despite efforts to defend themselves, the situation escalated violently, resulting in both women being beaten unconscious.

Details of the Incident

According to Amber Muhm, an organizer rallying support for the victims, the confrontation began as Dahlia and Jess were leaving the station. A man reportedly yelled anti-trans slurs at them. When Jess confronted the man, he physically attacked her without warning. Dahlia attempted to defend her friend using her cane, which led to other men joining in the assault against them.

Tragically, bystanders did not intervene to assist the women. Instead, witnesses reported that some were cheering the attackers, compounding the trauma of the incident. This lack of support from onlookers has intensified calls for greater community solidarity and intervention during such incidents.

Community Response

The attack on Dahlia and Jess has galvanized the local LGBTQ+ community, with many advocating for stronger protective measures and support systems. Minneapolis police have launched an investigation into the assault, but as of the latest reports, no arrests have been made.

Amber Muhm expressed her frustration with the police response, highlighting that such incidents are becoming all too common. "This keeps happening and it's ridiculous and unacceptable," she said, emphasizing the need for more decisive action from law enforcement.

Support and Advocacy

A rally was organized at the train station following the attack, drawing significant turnout from the LGBTQ+ community and allies. State Representative Leigh Finke, Minnesota’s first openly transgender legislator, was among those addressing the crowd. She noted that incidents like these underscore the importance of the state's Trans Refuge law, which protects individuals seeking gender-affirming care in Minnesota.

With the re-election of former President Donald Trump, who has been criticized for anti-trans rhetoric, many in the transgender community are expressing heightened concerns for their safety. Finke and other speakers at the rally emphasized the need for continued resilience and community building.

Building a Safer Community

Despite the fear and distress caused by the attack, Muhm remains hopeful. "The community here is beautiful," she asserted. "We're building a movement, we're going to get through this and we're going to be stronger for it."

In response to the rising hostility, some members of the transgender community are taking proactive measures to protect themselves. Many are enrolling in self-defense classes and considering legal avenues for self-protection, such as obtaining handgun permits. The emphasis is on preparedness, as they anticipate increased hostility fueled by misinformation and prejudice.

Bystanders at the rally reiterated the importance of resisting false narratives about transgender people, particularly those concerning gender-affirming care. "There's so much false data, so many false narratives," Muhm said, urging the community to remain steadfast in their advocacy efforts.

In conclusion, the attack on Dahlia and Jess is a stark reminder of the challenges faced by transgender individuals, but it also highlights the strength and solidarity of the LGBTQ+ community in Minneapolis. Rallying together, they aim to create a safer and more inclusive environment for all.
