Rutger published: LGBTQ Activist's Harrowing Tale from the Onset of Israel-Iran Conflict

Marty Rouse, a long-time champion and advocate within LGBTQ circles, recently recounted a trip that took an unexpected turn. He went from experiencing cultural vibrancy in Israel during Pride festivities, only watching it turn quickly sour with a surprise conflict between Israel and Iran. What was supposed be an exciting journey became an intense struggle simply just getting by each day.

Rouse, who traveled with a group from Jewish Federations in North America on June 6, had initially planned his trip around Tel Aviv's famous Pride parade. With time set aside both celebrating and connecting, Israel and Iran's tensions quickly put all that on ice.

Where It All Went Wrong: Conflict Escalates

The trip included meetings with Israeli President Isaac Herzog and visits such as visiting one newly opened LGBTQ health center in Tel Aviv - yet everything changed on June 13 when Israel launched airstrikes against Iran's nuclear facilities, sparking retaliation. Suddenly, this wasn't just any ordinary trip anymore—it was an unpredictable crisis.

Rouse shared how they suddenly felt safe at Sheraton Grand, where they remained stranded while Tel Aviv Pride got cancelled. Missiles flew dangerously close by while everyone settled inside shelter after shelter throughout each day—never knowing when an attack might come upon them again.

Finding Shelter During a Storm

Living through bomb shelters became such part-and-parcel. One at Sheraton Grand had almost homey feel while chaos played out above them—yet experiencing different shelters like Rouse's own hotel showed stark contrast. Hot, humid conditions brought sense isolation much greater than anything else that should never happen again!

"It was eye-opening—reminding us how fragile everything around us can be," he reflected back on such times spent together. It helped having Gordie Nathan close—a familiar face whose presence provided comfort even amidst utter fear—he confided later.

Retreating Strategically Towards Safety

As conflict worsened over days afterward from heightened tensions, Rouse and companions took smart decision: heading out towards Amman (Jordan) by June 15 via West Bank roadways until finally crossing Jordan River border. Completely different scene evoked thoughts like film scenes do—hot temperatures accompanied military everywhere.

Eventually, they settled in Amman where finally a dinner helped restore normality among them all, although threat persisted with Iranian missiles discovered flying overhead, too. Nevertheless, calm pervaded team, reflecting resilience under pressure few possess naturally.

Finding Solace Amidst War's Aftermath

When ceasefire was announced after 12 tense days between Israel & Iran conflicts, Rouse was greatly relieved alongside everyone else who experienced firsthand trauma. Back home now among friends—or here stateside—he expressed thankfulness out loud towards entity looking out & keeping all safe along difficult journey ahead: Jewish Federations North America organizations included.

"Unwavering support kept us moving," praised Rouse before highlighting teamwork displayed despite trying circumstances still echoing past him - saying companionship plays big role here especially during crisis! Solidarity leads LGBTQ folks globally too (equals fighting good fights everywhere anyway)."
