As Lesbian Visibility Week kicks off on this particular Easter Monday, April 21, we decided it was a great time ask our community: Who's your "Lesbian Jesus"?
The concept's been floating around in popular culture, often linked with Hayley Kiyoko, known and loved worldwide thanks in part her hit "Girls Like Girls." But what exactly does it mean being a "Lesbian Jesus"? In today's online culture, particularly on platforms like Urban Dictionary, a "Lesbian Jesus" stands as a cherished figure who watches over and empowers our LGBTQ+ family. They exude a magnetic "hot gay being" energy, offering protection and empowerment, lighting up our lives with their presence.
In our quest, we reached out at a lively London event, engaging with several LGBTQ+ folks. The answers we got were as wonderfully varied as our community. Comedian Ella Wills joked that she was her own "Lesbian Jesus." But when nudged, she named singer-songwriter Kehlani, gushing, "Like actual Jesus... she's God." Kehlani's music and persona deeply connect with fans, offering a divine spark and sense belonging.
Fiorenza from "I Kissed A Girl" shared that her current pick's none other than Chappell Roan. Roan's music and larger-than-life presence embody that "Lesbian Jesus" spirit.
Other voices in our conversation, like Abbie and Lisha, had their takes. Abbie stands by Blake Lively, affectionately dubbing her "Lesbian Jesus." Lisha finds her muse in Alex from "Orange Is The New Black," portrayed by Laura Prepon, citing Alex's "masculine energy," and as Abbie put it, "big d**k energy." These choices show how personal connections with our icons can be, shaped by unique vibes and aesthetics.
Other honorable mentions include Reneé Rapp from "Mean Girls" fame and singer Catty, who recently opened up Stevie Nicks. And let's not forget k.d. lang, an enduring symbol strength and artistry in our community.
Through their art and presence, these figures offer belonging, representation, embodying strength, beauty, and resilience. "Lesbian Jesus" isn't just a label but a salute those who uplift and inspire by setting an example.
We'd love hear from you. Who's your "Lesbian Jesus"? Share in comments below, and let keep this dialogue positive and respectful!
