In a surprising development, Tammy Bruce, an openly lesbian host at Fox News, has been nominated by Donald Trump for a position as a State Department spokesperson. This move raises eyebrows due to Bruce's past criticisms of her prospective superior, Senator Marco Rubio, who is Trump's nominee for Secretary of State.
Bruce's appointment is notable, as she will be serving under Rubio, a prominent Republican senator from Florida, assuming his confirmation goes through. Over the years, Bruce has been vocal in her opinions about Rubio on social media, often in a disparaging manner.
Bruce's social media history is peppered with critical statements about Rubio. In one instance from 2016, she likened the senator to "the kid waving frantically in the back of the room trying to prove relevance." This was not an isolated critique. She frequently used the moniker "Little Marco," echoing a term Donald Trump famously used during the 2016 presidential race.
Back in 2014, Bruce described Rubio as "another inexperienced senator who's never run a thing in his life" in response to his presidential aspirations. Despite these remarks, Bruce expressed enthusiasm for working alongside Rubio, calling him "one of the president's strongest allies" in a recent statement.
Tammy Bruce is no stranger to controversy. Her tenure at Fox News has been marked by several extreme statements. In one notable incident in 2021, she claimed that Democrats were supporting research into human-animal hybrids, a statement that ran alongside a sensational banner declaring, "Mutants are coming!"
Bruce stands out as one of the few openly LGBTQ+ personalities on Fox News, a status she has sometimes leveraged to criticize other members of the LGBTQ+ community. For example, in 2023, she joined others in denouncing Pride activities during a Fox News segment about a drag queen involved in a marketing campaign for The North Face, the outdoor gear company.
Bruce expressed her viewpoint, stating, "Most of the audience knows I'm a gay woman," but argued that there has been a "kind of push for something, for everyone to be a victim or for some kind of new dynamic," suggesting that Pride campaigns "really do damage to the gay and lesbian community" and were "embarrassing."
She further asserted, "And it's not about homophobia, it's about everything being politicized."
Her controversial comments aren't limited to LGBTQ+ issues. In 2021, Bruce took issue with President Joe Biden's declaration that men and women are equal. She commented, "Alright, you noticed how he added 'women and men are created equal,' not just 'men,'" before adding, "It matters, right? That's not what the Founders wrote."
Bruce suggested that this change implied a correction of the Founders' words, which she found objectionable, quipping, "Apparently, the sacred words of our Founders weren't inclusive enough for Sleepy Joe, so he corrected them."
In that same year, Bruce voiced regret over receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. She stated, "I got the vaccine! In certain ways, it's like, 'If I could give it back!' at this point, you know?"
Tammy Bruce's new role within the State Department promises to be an interesting chapter, given her outspoken nature and history of polarizing statements. As she steps into this position, it remains to be seen how her past remarks and her dynamic with Senator Rubio will influence her ability to perform her duties effectively.
