“Legal Action Promised” – LGBTQ+ Advocate Responds to Pride Event Obstruction in Romania

In a recent development, a prominent LGBTQ+ activist from Belgium has declared plans to initiate legal action following reports of police interference with a Pride event in Oradea, a city in north-western Romania.

On Sunday, July 27, the activist, Rémy Bonny, posted a video on TikTok capturing the tension as local authorities appeared to prevent the Pride parade from proceeding. Bonny, who leads the Belgium-based LGBTQ+ organization Forbidden Colours, addressed his audience with determination. "Pride is officially being stopped here in this Romanian city," he announced. "We will exhaust every avenue to ensure that our march proceeds. This is not how events should unfold within the European Union (EU)," he emphasized.

The activist was resolute in his message: "We must escalate this to the court of justice. There is an urgent need for intervention by the European Commission. The current climate, where autocratic leaders feel empowered to infringe upon our rights, is enabled by the Commission's inaction. This will not continue unchallenged. See you in court," Bonny declared.

The TikTok clip was accompanied by a powerful caption: "They tried to hide us. We made history instead… If Oradea prohibits queer rights, it risks losing EU funding." Bonny further elaborated in the video: "Police blocked the city center of Oradea to suppress our visibility. But we marched, establishing the first-ever Pride here. Our next step is to take this matter to Brussels. Should Oradea impose a ban on queer rights, it faces the potential loss of EU funds."

According to Marcel Boloș, Romania's former minister overseeing European investments and projects, the country has benefitted from over €100 billion in EU funding since joining the bloc in 2007. These funds have primarily been allocated to infrastructure and community development.

In March, Orbán's right-wing Fidesz party enacted legislation to ban Pride marches, citing supposed threats to minors posed by depictions of homosexuality. This prompted a coalition of 20 EU nations to sign a joint statement, expressing grave concern over "recent legislative and constitutional amendments infringing on the fundamental rights of LGBTIQ+ persons adopted by the Hungarian parliament."
