Leaning on love and family: Lea Salonga's journey with acceptance

Leaning in on her personal experiences with family and acceptance, beloved Broadway and Disney star Lea Salonga opens up about supporting her transgender son, Nic Chien. Known far and wide from her roles in hits like Miss Saigon, Mulan, K-Pop Demon Hunters, and Aladdin, Salonga has always championed LGBTQ+ rights. But when it came down her own family, her advocacy took on a whole new meaning.

In a chat on January 22nd while discussing her role as Madame Thérnardier in Les Misérables: World Tour Spectacular, Salonga reflected on her personal journey as a mom. Nic, at just 14, bravely announced they were transmasculine, and by last November, they shared their top surgery story. Now at 19, Nic's courage and authenticity continue inspire countless others.

The magic recipe in parenthood: Unconditional love

Salonga didn't hold back about why unconditional love matters so much in parenting. Thinking about her son, who uses he/they pronouns, she put it plainly: "If you think you won't love your child if they come out as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or trans, then maybe it's best not have kids." Her wise words remind us that love shouldn't come with strings attached.

Adding some Filipino spirit, she said, "Save yourself from drama and heartbreak," switching effortlessly with, "If hindi mo kaya, 'wag na lang," which means, "if you can't, don't." Her statement highlights a parent's duty fully embrace their children's identities.

Salonga also made an interesting point, saying, "Kids aren't customizable. Every child comes as a blind box. You don't know what you're going get." It's a vivid reminder that parenthood's unpredictable nature makes acceptance absolutely essential.

Embracing change and growth

Thinking about Nic's journey, Salonga beams with pride over her son's changes. "When changes happen, like a voice drop or new body hair, it leads positive outcomes," she said happily. "All I really want's a happy kid." Prioritize her child's happiness shows just how supportive she really.

Nic's been open about their transition and hurdles along that path. In an earlier chat, they admitted, "I'm still figuring out... believe me, lot tears! A lot like, ‘Tell me how you feel,' and many, ‘I dunno what I'm feeling.'"
