Get ready, Washington, D.C.! The city will burst with color and celebration as it hosts WorldPride Parade in 2025, a dazzling tribute recognizing and uplifting achievements within our LGBTQ+ community. Steering this vibrant event are three incredible grand marshals: Laverne Cox, actress and trans icon; Reneé Rapp, a talented singer and actress; and Deacon Maccubbin, a trailblazer in LGBTQ activism. The Capital Pride Alliance couldn't be more thrilled about having these inspiring figures lead such an important occasion.
Laverne Cox isn't just a name; she represents a movement. She changed history in 2014 by becoming not only famous but also by being a trailblazer as she was nominated as an openly transgender person in a Primetime Emmy acting category. Her standout role in "Orange Is The New Black" opened doors and minds. But she didn't stop there; in 2015, she snagged a Daytime Emmy Award with her documentary "Laverne Cox Presents: The T Word," which shares stories from young trans people about their journeys. Cox continues her tireess work as an advocate, recently stating, "Right now, queer and trans folks are facing so many challenges. But we're resilient, we embrace who we are, and we're not about fear. We're about standing tall and proud."
If you haven't heard Reneé Rapp yet, you're missing out. She's making waves in music and theater, and she does it all while proudly embracing her identity as a lesbian. She first caught our attention playing Regina George in Broadway's "Mean Girls" and then, she made a splash with her music, charmig listeners with her EP "Everything To Everyone" and her debut album "Snow Angel." Keep an eye out, because "Bite Me," her latest album, drops on May 21 and promises more exploration on identity and empowerment. Rapp describes Pride as "not just a celebration; it's our protection, our visibility, and it stands as an intersectional protest. Being part WorldPride isn't just an honor; it's a must. We have work left in fighting and celebrating who we are."
Deacon Maccubbin has been a cornerstone in LGBTQ+ advocacy. He founded Lambda Rising, one first LGBTQ bookstores in America, and was instrumental in putting together D.C.'s first Gay Pride in 1975. Dubbed "patriarch D.C. Pride," Maccubbin has tirelessly dedicated his life pushing forward visibility and community building. Being named a grand marshal reflects his lifelong commitment inclusivity and equality.
Mark your calendars June 7. That day, Cox, Rapp, and Maccubbin will lead WorldPride Parade down 14th Street, making a powerful statement about diversity and ongoing struggle recognition and rights.
WorldPride 2025 isn't just another celebration; it marks a turning point in a global movement towards diversity, unity, and growth. As people from all walks life gather in Washington, D.C., they're celebrating victories achieved and looking forward with hope and resilience. Guided by grand marshals embodying courage and advocacy, this event promises shine a light on collective journey creating an inclusive and equitable future.
