Rutger published: Lambda Legal Seeks More Plaintiffs to Contest Trump Policies

Kevin Jennings, CEO of Lambda Legal, a prominent LGBTQ+ civil rights organization, recently emphasized the need for more plaintiffs willing to challenge the policies of former President Donald Trump. Jennings articulated this during a conversation, highlighting the organization's preparedness for the challenges posed by the Trump administration.

According to Jennings, Trump employed a "shock and awe" strategy, introducing numerous controversial policies rapidly to create a sense of chaos. However, Lambda Legal anticipated these moves and has been strategically preparing to counteract them.

Lawsuits Against Discriminatory Policies

Lambda Legal has a history of successfully challenging discriminatory policies, having sued the Trump administration 14 times during his previous term, winning 12 of those cases—a remarkable 86% success rate. Jennings announced that the organization is currently filing three significant lawsuits. These legal challenges target Trump's trans military ban, his executive order that seeks to define gender strictly as male or female, and his efforts against diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs.

Jennings stressed that overcoming Trump's agenda is feasible, but it requires active participation and resistance from the LGBTQ+ community. Simply remaining passive or feeling overwhelmed could lead to complacency, which could undermine efforts to protect civil rights.

Engaging the Community

Jennings described two common emotions he encounters from the community: depression and resignation. While understanding the feelings of despair due to ongoing discrimination, Jennings rejects the notion of resignation—the idea that nothing can be done. He warns that this hopelessness is exactly what the Trump administration desires, stating, "Once we lose our faith that America can be better, we've lost everything. We've lost the battle."

To combat this, Jennings calls on LGBTQ+ individuals affected by Trump's executive orders to consider becoming plaintiffs in upcoming lawsuits. He encouraged those who feel harmed by these policies to reach out to Lambda Legal's national legal help desk for guidance and to explore the process of becoming a plaintiff. He emphasized, "We can't just say this law is bad. You have to have someone who has been harmed by a law to challenge it."

Given the current political landscape where the executive and legislative branches may not be favorable, Jennings believes the judicial branch, with many Democrat-appointed judges, remains a viable avenue for achieving victories.

Get Involved and Take Action

Jennings also offered advice to those who may not be in a position to become plaintiffs. He urged everyone to take some form of action, whether it's testifying before state legislatures or something as simple as sending a postcard to a congressperson. "What they want is for you to feel powerless. Don't give them that," Jennings asserted.

He encouraged individuals to stay informed and engaged, suggesting subscribing to newsletters and alerts to keep abreast of developments that affect the LGBTQ+ community.

In closing, Jennings reiterated the importance of community involvement and solidarity in facing the challenges ahead. "Be an active participant in the fight for your rights. Every action counts, and together, we can make a difference."

Lambda Legal's call to action serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for LGBTQ+ rights and the necessity for continued vigilance and participation in safeguarding those rights.

For those seeking to contribute to the cause, Jennings' message is clear: take action, stay informed, and remember that the fight for equality is far from over.
