Running in tribute: honoring a legacy
Kitty Scott-Claus, one lively finalist from RuPaul's Drag Race UK, isn't just lacing up her sneakers—she's tying up a whole lotta heart. As she gears up (pun intended) or maybe down, she has London Marathon on her mind. But this isn't just any run; it's a journey dedicated in loving memory. Her dear friend, The Vivienne, who left us all too soon, will be right there in spirit. Plus, Kitty's raising dough and awareness—something The Vivienne was passionate about—for Sahir House.
A challenge with profound meaning
The marathon idea? That's all Jeremy Joseph's brainchild. After his 14th marathon—yep, number 14!—he nudged Kitty, throwing out a “Hey, wanna run 26 miles?” At first, Kitty, who was new on her fitness path, thought, why not? But then came The Vivienne's tragic loss, and suddenly this race meant so much more.
The Vivienne, who wowed us all by clinching that first Drag Race UK crown in 2019, sadly passed away on January 5th, near her Chester home. Her family shared that a cardiac arrest linked with ketamine use took her from us.
Kitty reflects, “Being around The Vivienne was like basking in constant warmth. She was like that protective older sister, always ready with advice and always fighting in your corner.” Her absence at 32 hit hard, not just amongst family and friends, but resonated through all who adored her vibrant presence.
Heartfelt memories and milestones
Jeremy Joseph, a friend long before The Vivienne became a household name, recalls moments filled with awe. Like when big names, say Idina Menzel, welcomed her with open arms at performances. Jeremy fondly remembers her taking on roles like that Wicked Witch in "The Wizard" on London's West End. Even Andrew Lloyd Webber couldn't help but watch, entranced by The Vivienne's undeniable talent.
Running with purpose: causes close at heart
For Kitty and Jeremy, running isn't just about pain and perseverance. It's a chance—a golden one—to give back. Sahir House, helping LGBTQ+ folks and those with HIV, was dearer than dear. But they're also raising awareness and funds beyond. We're talking Pancreatic Cancer UK, Antidote (helping LGBTQ+ with substance struggles), and Switchboard, that invaluable national helpline. Amid political headwinds and rulings affecting transgender rights, these causes ring louder than ever.
A marathon in drag: celebrating life and legacy
Picture this: Kitty, decked out in head-to-toe glam, pounding pavement, but skipping those killer heels. At mile 21, aka Rainbow Road, she'll team up with fellow Drag Race star Cheryl. Together, they'll belt out Heather Small's "Proud." And Jeremy will be there, setting them up, reflecting on The Vivienne's enduring mark on our hearts.
Running in honor really sealed itself on that first outing after The Vivienne passed. Kitty recalls, “We began this run all uncertain, and wondered if we should even do it. But as it turns out, that run was exactly right. It was an embracing moment, one where we celebrated and remembered. Truly, it was healing.”
Circle April 27th on your calendar, as Kitty and Jeremy take on London Marathon with meaning, love, and a vow—to keep The Vivienne's fire burning bright.
