Kevin Aviance, a legendary figure in the LGBTQ+ community and an influential persona in New York City's vibrant nightlife scene, has expressed his gratitude for being 'fortunate to be alive' following a recent medical emergency that landed him in the hospital.
Aviance, widely recognized as an iconic drag performer and a pivotal member of the ballroom scene, experienced a significant health scare over a weekend, as announced by his team through a heartfelt social media statement on May 26. The 56-year-old artist, whose groundbreaking 1996 track “C*nty (The Feeling)” was prominently sampled in Beyoncé’s Renaissance album on the track “Pure/Honey”, had to be rushed to the hospital due to septic poisoning and pneumonia.
The statement, adorned with a graphic that reads, “Prayers for Kevin Aviance. In Recovery. Your Love and Support Means Everything,” revealed that medical professionals deemed him “incredibly lucky to be alive.”
“In the past 24 hours, our beloved Kevin experienced a very serious health scare,” the statement elaborated. “While at home, he began to have difficulty breathing. Initially attributing it to an asthma attack, he believed it would pass. However, the situation quickly deteriorated.”
Kevin was transported to the emergency room, where he received a diagnosis of septic poisoning and pneumonia. According to his doctors, Kevin’s survival was nothing short of miraculous. To convey the severity of the condition, his team shared, “The doctors have told us that Kevin is incredibly lucky to be alive.”
In an update to The Advocate on Monday, Aviance's publicist, Len Evans, stated, “Kevin is currently on oxygen and is under close medical supervision to ensure the infection is fully eradicated from his system. He is still battling pneumonia and remains in stable condition while recuperating. We ask everyone to please keep Kevin in your thoughts and prayers during this time.”
The statement from Evans further revealed, “He had overexerted himself by working continuously over the past few weeks to release his new single. Kevin spent extensive hours in the recording studio finalizing his album and performing back-to-back gigs. It all simply caught up to him.”
Aviance’s social media post concluded with a poignant reminder: “This is an emotional time for Kevin, his family, and all of us who cherish him. It serves as a reminder that health is paramount. Our bodies often whisper before they scream, and we must heed these signs and take a step back.” The post urged, “Please continue to keep Kevin in your thoughts and prayers as he recovers. Your love and energy mean the world to him.”
The LGBTQ+ community and numerous celebrity supporters have rallied around Aviance, sending messages of love and support. Figures such as All Stars 6 winner Kylie Sonique Love, Canada’s Drag Race champion Priyanka, nightlife legend Amanda Lepore, and many others have voiced their support for the recovery of this cherished icon.
Kevin Aviance's influence in the queer community is undeniable. As a member of the House of Aviance, one of the most distinguished Houses in ballroom culture, he has left an indelible mark with hits like “C*nty” and “Din Da Da.” His resilience and contributions continue to inspire countless individuals across the globe.
