Rutger published: Kenyan LGBTQ+ Activists Raise Alarm Over Foreign Influence

Nairobi's Spotlight on a Controversial Family Values Conference

Just recently, Nairobi found itself at center stage, hosting a high-profile conference focused on family values. This event drew a mix bag: anti-LGBTQ+ groups mingling with political figures from various corners. It's only in its second year, but this Pan-African Conference has already raised eyebrows and sparked concern among human rights advocates. They're sounding alarms about what they see as a wave— a rising tide fueled in part by far-right groups from across America, spreading anti-LGBTQ+ sentiments across Africa.

The growing impact from U.S. influences on Africa

To many African activists, this conference isn't just another event. It's seen as a warning siren and a growing threat against LGBTQ+ rights on their home soil. Lorna Dias from Galck+ and Melody Njuki with INEND aren't sugarcoating it. They're pointing fingers at some U.S. organizations, namely Family Watch International, The Political Network For Values, and The Center For Family And Human Rights. All these groups have reputations that precede them— staunch stances against LGBTQ+ and reproductive rights worldwide.

As these organizations gain more traction, activists are ringing alarm bells about a surge in anti-rights efforts throughout Africa. "For those in our LGBTQI+ community who've been battling mounting homophobia, this conference wasn't just a talk shop. It's a clear challenge being thrown down, one that threatens all across Africa," Dias and Njuki pointedly remarked.

Leading up, Kenyan media was buzzing with ads about this conference. The promotion promised tools and strategies aimed at "safeguarding our values." Interestingly, U.S. Secretary Of State Marco Rubio was pegged as a special guest, though in reality, he was a no-show.

The western narrative and cultural contradictions

American sponsors, who have been pointed out as hate groups by The Southern Poverty Law Center, tout an idealized "natural family" concept— a Western notion centered on nuclear families. This contrasts sharply with Africa's traditional communal family views. The activists didn't miss a chance calling out this irony; anti-rights proponents accuse LGBTQ+ movements as being Western importers, yet they themselves are rooting deep in Western cultural norms.

This shift seems largely pushed along by Christian religious leaders in Africa, advocating a brand-new, more conservative form evangelical Christianity. With President William Ruto stepping in around 2022, LGBTQ+ advocates have noticed an uptick in conservative policies causing more concern. But it's not all grim: there have been key legal triumphs like Kenya's Supreme Court ruling in 2023, which paved legal avenues allowing LGBTQ+ groups and registrations with terms like "gay" and "lesbian."

The ongoing battles and global links

Even with these legal wins, groups like Family Watch International relentlessly fan anti-LGBTQ+ flames throughout Africa, using events like this as platforms. Activists point out similar meetings, such as 2023's "V Transatlantic Summit" over in New York, attended by anti-LGBTQ+ Kenyan MP Peter Kaluma, who later forwarded a Family Protection Bill, echoing Uganda's infamous "Kill The Gays" law.

Family Watch's influence stretches even further, seeking funds from allies like Russia in this global anti-LGBTQ+ drive. Leaked info reveals Russia injected $300,000 backing another conference in Uganda back in 2023.

The changing political environment

Reflecting back, Dias and Njuki voiced frustration: "Previously, we relied on U.S. oversight keeping our political leaders in check. That's not today's reality. President Trump's public assaults on America's queer community have revved up Kenya's anti-queer factions. Those anti-rights players are now back in action, eager on altering our constitution and undoing human rights protections."

Their final message was a stark reality check: "Liberty and everyday life as we know it are teetering in jeopardy. Many, caught up in survival mode, might miss its enormity. But make no mistake, we're all strapped on a rollercoaster towards a place offering no refuge."
