Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has strongly reaffirmed his commitment to supporting LGBTQ+ rights in the face of recent legislative actions by state lawmakers. The controversy arose after the Kentucky General Assembly voted to overturn a previously established ban on the discredited practice known as conversion therapy, reigniting a heated debate on LGBTQ+ protections.
The Legislative Vote
On March 14th, a last-minute vote by House lawmakers resulted in the passage of a bill that would once again allow conversion therapy under certain conditions. "When I vetoed the most harmful anti-LGBTQ+ bill during my election year, I did so because my faith teaches me that all children are children of God," Beshear explained. "I wanted those children, who were being targeted by their general assembly, to know their governor cares for them. My faith compels me to act in their best interest."
