Kelly Marie Tran's deep dive with "The Wedding Banquet"

Kelly Marie Tran, whom many know as Rose Tico from "The Last Jedi," has recently opened up about an incredibly transformative experience. The actress shared how her role in "The Wedding Banquet," a queer comedy, played a pivotal role in her decision publicly come out as queer. Finding herself through "The Wedding Banquet"

In an interview with a popular magazine, Tran talked about how "The Wedding Banquet" had a profound impact on her personal journey. The film, featuring gay comedian Bowen Yang, fostered a unique environment where acceptance and support thrived, allowing Tran space she needed explore and embrace her own identity.

In this film, Tran steps in as Angela, who's wholeheartedly devoted her girlfriend Lee, played by Lily Gladstone. The plot takes a twist when Lee agrees marry a gay friend so he can secure green card, with agreement that he'll fund her IVF treatment. Tensions rise when his grandmother unexpectedly arrives, determined throw an extravagant Korean wedding banquet.

Experiencing queer joy on set

Recalling her time on set, Tran described it as a place filled with “queer joy,” saying, “There was so much queer joy on this set, whether from cast or crew. It was first time I'd been on a predominantly queer set, and there was a ton joy in that.” This environment helped inspire Tran come out during an interview.

The key moment came on day they filmed wedding banquet scene—a blend celebration and introspection. Tran recounted, "It was wedding day, and everyone was joyful.... Then journalist asks me, ‘What are you most excited about?' and I just naturally came out. Then I was like, ‘Oh God, what have I done?'”

Owning who she really was

Despite initial jitters, Tran felt assured in her identity. She said, "I don't think it's something I should be ashamed, especially when we're celebrating that part not just my identity but that many cast and crew."

While filming, Tran formed close connections with her co-stars. Lily Gladstone shared how Tran gave each cast member a special candle at filming's end. "The candles said: 'Don't Fear Your Queer' and at bottom, 'when you feel like throwing whole a$s Korean wedding instead embracing who you are,'" Gladstone said, highlighting camaraderie and support in cast.
