In a powerful public demonstration, Keir Starmer, the UK's Prime Minister, took an HIV test to emphasize the importance of de-stigmatizing HIV testing. Joined by singer and HIV advocate Beverley Knight and Richard Angell, the Chief Executive of the Terrence Higgins Trust (THT), Starmer utilized an HIV home test kit to mark the commencement of HIV Testing Week in the UK.
"It's really important to be tested," Starmer stated, highlighting the simplicity and speed of the process. The UK Health Security Agency estimates that there are at least 4,700 individuals unknowingly living with HIV in England, a number that increases to 107,000 across the entire UK.
Beverley Knight, along with Keir Starmer and Richard Angell, took their tests together in a televised event aimed at encouraging others to follow suit. The UK government has pledged to eradicate new HIV cases in England by 2030, launching an HIV "action plan" to achieve this goal.
Starmer expressed his intention to advocate for HIV testing on a global scale, "I suppose my task now is to talk to prime ministers and leaders across the world and say, you should do it in your own country. If people test, they will know their status, it is better that people know." He emphasized that knowing one's status is crucial, as it not only allows access to treatment but also contributes to the collective effort to end new HIV transmissions by 2030.
Richard Angell, who works closely with the government to reduce new HIV cases, described Starmer's public testing as an "important symbol" for those living with HIV and an essential step in fighting the stigma surrounding sexually transmitted infections.
"Tests are free, confidential, and easy," Angell stated, "and they are available for everyone during this week. It will make a big difference." In the UK, appointments at sexual health clinics are confidential and not linked to a patient’s medical record or their GP. The NHS allows patients to book appointments without providing their real name.
HIV home test kits are available for purchase from retailers or through the THT, costing £15, including delivery. These kits include both a finger-prick blood test and an oral gum swab for convenience and privacy.
A recent YouGov poll, conducted on behalf of the THT, revealed that over 80% of adults in England are unaware of the availability of home test kits.
Beverley Knight reflected on her personal connection to the cause, "Living with HIV today is a world away from the experience that my late best friend Tyrone endured in the early 2000s. People living with HIV can now easily know their status, access effective treatment, and live a long, healthy life. I wish this was the case for Ty."
In memory of Tyrone, Knight is using her platform alongside the Prime Minister to increase awareness about the ease of testing. "People need to hear the crucial message that thanks to effective medication, people living with HIV can’t pass it on, so we can end this epidemic once and for all," she added.
