Karla Sofía Gascón Issues Apology for Controversial Tweets
Acclaimed actress Karla Sofía Gascón has publicly apologized after a series of controversial tweets from her past surfaced, sparking widespread criticism. Gascón, who recently made history as the first openly transgender actress to receive an Academy Award nomination for her performance in Emilia Pérez, found herself at the center of a social media storm following the rediscovery of these tweets.
The tweets, first brought to light by journalist Sarah Hagi, contained derogatory remarks about Muslims, George Floyd, and diversity within the film industry, particularly aimed at the Oscars. Although many of these posts have since been removed from her account, the backlash has been significant.
Several tweets expressed anti-Islamic sentiment, including one that referred to Muslims with an offensive slur. A notable post from 2020 featured a photograph of a Muslim family dining in a restaurant, including a woman wearing a burqa. In her comments, Gascón critiqued Islamic customs in a sarcastic tone, stating, "Islam is marvelous, without any machismo. Women are respected, and when they are so respected they are left with a little squared hole on their faces for their eyes to be visible and their mouths, but only if she behaves. Although they dress this way for their own enjoyment. How DEEPLY DISGUSTING OF HUMANITY."
Another tweet from 2020, which remains online, was posted shortly after the murder of George Floyd. It described Floyd as a "drug addict swindler" and included the controversial statement: "His death has served to once again demonstrate that there are people who still consider Black people to be monkeys without rights and consider policemen to be assassins. They’re all wrong."
Further criticism was stirred by Gascón's comments about the Oscars. In a 2021 tweet, she wrote: "More and more the #Oscars are looking like a ceremony for independent and protest films, I didn’t know if I was watching an Afro-Korean festival, a Black Lives Matter demonstration or the 8M. Apart from that, an ugly, ugly gala."
In addition to these, a 2019 post targeting Miley Cyrus for her public relationship with Kaitlynn Carter described it as "Evil, horrible, unnatural, lesbian perversion."
Following the removal of many of these tweets, Gascón issued an apology via a statement to media outlet Variety. She expressed deep regret for the pain caused by her words. "I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt," she said. "As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain. All my life I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness."
Despite her apology, the impact of these tweets continues to resonate. Many in the LGBTQ+ community and beyond have expressed disappointment and frustration, given Gascón's role as a prominent figure in advocating for diversity and inclusion.
As the Oscars approach, Gascón is still nominated for the prestigious Best Actress category, competing alongside talented actresses such as Cynthia Erivo, Demi Moore, Mickey Madison, and Fernanda Torres. The Academy Awards have not yet released a statement regarding her controversial social media history.
This incident has sparked discussions about the responsibilities of public figures to maintain respectful dialogue online and the consequences of past behavior coming to light.
