Rutger published: Kamala Harris Discusses Her Vice-Presidential Pick and Reflects on Diversity in Politics

Kamala Harris, a key player in American politics and a former vice-presidential contender, recently shared some behind-the-scenes insights about her decision-making during a pivotal presidential election. In her new book, "107 Days," Harris pulls back on her whirlwind campaign experience after Joe Biden exited, leaving her racing against time in one intense historical moment.

Why Harris passed on Pete Buttigieg

During a chat with Rachel Maddow, Harris revealed why Pete Buttigieg, once her top choice and a fellow Democratic contender, didn't end up as her running mate. Buttigieg, who made headlines as a trailblazing openly gay major presidential candidate, seemed like a natural pick at first.

But as Harris explained, her decision had layers. "America was already adjusting," she said, hinting at her identity as a Black woman and her interfaith marriage. Adding Buttigieg could have upped that complexity in a tense political climate. In a move that felt safer, she ultimately went with Tim Walz, Minnesota's governor.

What swayed Harris's choice

Harris dives deep in her book, sharing how tough it was not picking Buttigieg, acknowledging that his sexuality played a role in her deliberations. Talking with Maddow, she laid out how daunting it was gearing up against Trump.

"Being a Black woman with a gay VP candidate in a race against Trump meant thinking through every angle," Harris said. It wasn't an easy choice, and while it saddened her, she believed it was a necessary call looking at how things stood politically. Her decision, she stressed, was all about strategy, not bias.

Buttigieg's take and what's ahead

Reacting with Politico, Buttigieg stressed showing voters what you can bring beyond identity. "You've got ta offer voters what you can deliver," he said, leaning on real results over labels.

Buttigieg's journey has stayed inspiring. A July poll showed him as a top Democratic choice heading toward a 2028 run, underscoring his persistent popularity and ability. As he and his husband raise two kids, they reflect America and its evolving political scene.

Despite everything, Harris remains optimistic about diverse leadership's future in America. She believes in Americans' readiness and praised Buttigieg's broad voter appeal, even among conservatives.

"107 Days" gives a rare peek at a transformative period in Harris's political ride and offers fans a behind-the-scenes glimpse at what shapes big campaigns.

The conversation around diversity in politics keeps growing, and Harris's story sheds light on navigating identity and leadership on a national stage.
