The tragic killing of Ashia Davis, a beloved 34-year-old transgender woman, has once again highlighted the violence faced by the trans community. Earlier this year, Ashia's life was cut short when she was murdered at a Woodward Inn in Michigan. Her body was discovered the next day, marking a chilling start to Pride Month.
Carlos Lamar Scotland, the 17-year-old responsible for this heinous act, was arrested in March 2024. He has agreed to plead guilty to charges of second-degree murder and felony firearm possession. This plea comes with a sentence ranging from 17 to 30 years, though it cannot replace the vibrant life that was lost.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy initially charged Scotland with first-degree murder among other felonies. Scotland's actions on that fateful night have left indelible scars on Ashia's family and the local LGBTQ+ community.
At the sentencing hearing, Julisa Abad, a close friend of Ashia and the director of transgender advocacy at the Fair Michigan Justice Project, provided a moving testimony. Recalling the events, she shared, "Most people's memories of their loved ones are good memories. The last memory that I have is seeing my friend on the floor outside of the hotel corner room with black streaming all over the floor."
Julisa's poignant words capture the heartbreak felt by those who knew Ashia. "Only two people were in that room that night and will ever know the true events of what happened," she said. "What we do know is that Ashia Davis was shot execution-style in the back of the head and left for dead."
Abad also criticized Scotland's demeanor in court, describing it as "rude" and lacking remorse. Her remarks underscore the ongoing challenges faced by the trans community, particularly when it comes to seeking justice for crimes committed against them.
In the Black and brown communities, the pressures and stigmas around gender identity can lead to tragic outcomes. "The sad reality is, particularly in the Black and brown community, men that are enamored with transwomen cannot be themselves and have to resort to loving us in private and killing us in public," Abad said. Her powerful statement serves as a reminder of the cultural and systemic issues that need to be addressed.
Ashia's mother, distraught and heartbroken, shared her pain with local news. "She’s my only child," she said, reflecting on her daughter's aspirations. "She was just getting a job and went to school. I just don’t understand why this happened."
The Human Rights Campaign’s Tori Cooper expressed her sorrow and frustration over Ashia's death. "Ashia Davis was a beautiful human being who deserves at a minimum to be alive today, sharing her cheerful spirit with us," Cooper stated. "During Pride Month and every other month, we’re faced with yet another tragic reminder that as Black trans women, we are under attack in this country. Anti-trans rhetoric and stigma perpetuate this violence. It’s beyond unacceptable that not nearly enough of those in power have spoken out against this inhumanity. We continue to call for justice — for Ashia and for all those we’ve lost without sufficient answers."
As members of the LGBTQ+ community, it's crucial to stay informed about the issues impacting us. By subscribing to newsletters and joining advocacy groups, we can amplify our voices and demand change.
The tragic loss of Ashia Davis should serve as a catalyst for renewed activism and awareness. Let us honor her memory by continuing to fight for justice and equality, ensuring that no more lives are lost to senseless violence. Together, we can create a safer, more inclusive world for everyone.
