Judicial review threatens UK trans healthcare leader's future

There's a storm brewing over Gender Plus Hormone Clinic, a top-tier private provider in UK's trans healthcare scene. A judicial review has thrown their future status as a regulated clinic, granted by none other than CQC, up in the air, prompting widespread concern.

Gender Plus isn't just any clinic—it stands alone as Britain's only independent, regulated trans healthcare provider, serving those aged 16 and up. They stick closely to NHS guidelines on treating gender dysphoria, although they don't provide puberty blockers.

The story behind this judicial review

The origins? A former patient from London's Tavistock youth gender clinic and a mother who prefers anonymity. The stakes are high: this review will decide if Gender Plus can keep its vital regulated status, which it needs to continue helping people.

Back in January 2024, Gender Plus was granted regulated status, and before year's end, they were celebrating an "outstanding" rating from CQC. The clinic's excellence in risk management, staff training, and patient care was applauded.

Activists are raising red flags, saying that losing this status could bring "very real dangers" and make timely, appropriate healthcare seemingly out of reach for trans youth.

Gender Plus: Committed to top-notch care

Dr. Aidan Kelly, a consultant clinical psychologist and director at Gender Plus, remains hopeful about what lies ahead. He talked about his team's steadfast commitment to offering "safe, effective, essential healthcare." With their extensive experience with young patients, he said, "Our dedication to exceptional service resulted in both our CQC registration in January 2024 and our outstanding rating in December 2024."

One patient shared their experience, saying, "The care at Gender Plus has been incredible. I felt genuinely cared for by people focused solely on ensuring my safe and healthy transition."

What could losing regulated status mean?

Without regulated status, trans youth in the UK might face significant obstacles. Long NHS wait times, sketchy unregulated providers, or risky self-medication could become their reality.

Right now, GPs often turn down shared-care requests involving unregulated clinics, making access to essential hormone therapy even harder. Dr. Kelly stressed how vital regulation is, saying, "Other services have let patients down due to a lack of regulation. It's no surprise those seeking to restrict NHS care for trans youth are going after the only recognized independent provider for 16 and 17-year-olds."

Gender Plus closing won't stop transitions from happening, it might just make them a lot riskier. "The dangers of this scenario are clear," warned Dr. Kelly. "Taking away this care will only place people at further risk," he added.

Bigger implications for trans youth

If the High Court backs CQC's decision, trans teens won't have to resort to unsafe "grey market" methods that lack proper medical guidance—something that's key for their well-being.

Research by Dr. Natacha Kennedy, a trans academic at the University of London, uncovers that the UK's ban on puberty blockers is having "serious adverse effects" on trans youth. Many young people report feeling "intense distress," along with signs of depression and anxiety.
