During a recent press conference following her appearance on Celebrity Big Brother UK, pop sensation and outspoken LGBTQ+ advocate JoJo Siwa shared unsettling details about an encounter with actor Mickey Rourke that was never aired on television. Siwa, who came out as queer in 2021, has always been open about her identity and experiences, and this incident was no exception.
Rourke, who was eventually removed from the show due to making homophobic remarks and behaving inappropriately with other housemates, had a tense exchange with Siwa that was partially broadcast. However, Siwa revealed on a podcast that many disturbing details were left out of the final edit.
"What happened was, he came out of the kitchen and approached me," Siwa recounted. "I was trying to explain why his comments were not okay, hoping to clear the air. But he wanted nothing to do with it." Rourke reportedly accused her of "kicking a dog while it’s down," to which Siwa responded, "No, that’s not the point at all."
Siwa's attempt to convey her feelings was interrupted by a fellow housemate, Chris, who tried to mediate. Rourke, however, dismissed her concerns entirely, stating, "I don’t really care about your feelings." This revelation was particularly shocking to Siwa, who noted that none of this exchange was included in the episode.
"That’s what really tipped me over the edge," Siwa explained. "He then admitted, ‘I knew what I was saying, and that’s why I said it. I wanted to offend you. I like poking at a bear.’" This admission left Siwa feeling vulnerable and unsafe. When she stood up in frustration, Rourke accused her of attacking him, prompting Siwa to sit back down.
"I just wanted to have a conversation," she said, "but he walked away, and that’s when it really shook me up. That’s when I broke." Siwa shared that she informed Big Brother of her discomfort, especially since her bed was next to Rourke's. "I told them, ‘I don’t really feel safe around him.’"
Despite the distressing experience, Siwa chose to find a silver lining. "I realized that I can make an example out of this situation," she said. "He’s not a good man, and I will stand by that. But he’s also a hurt man, and I can have sympathy for him while not condoning his behavior."
Siwa and her housemates jokingly referred to Rourke as Voldemort, highlighting their discomfort with his presence. Throughout her time on the show, Siwa’s identity as a queer person became a focal point. In particular, one episode featured a candid moment where she discussed her gender identity, revealing that she might identify as nonbinary in the future.
Siwa’s journey of self-discovery continued as she moved away from labeling herself strictly as a lesbian. In a heartfelt conversation with drag artist Danny Beard, Siwa expressed her newfound sense of identity. "I feel, like, so queer," she exclaimed. "I’ve always told myself I’m a lesbian, and now I realize I’m queer, and that’s really cool."
With excitement, she declared, "F**k the L, I’m going to the Q! That’s what I love about sexuality." Siwa’s openness about her evolving identity serves as a powerful reminder of the fluidity and diversity of the LGBTQ+ experience.
