JoJo Siwa recently opened up about her sexual identity, making it clear that her relationship with Chris Hughes doesn't change who she really identifies as—a proud queer person.
Earlier this year, JoJo, known from her time on both "Dance Moms" and as a music sensation, caught everyone's attention. She left "Celebrity Big Brother UK" not with a trophy, but with a fresh romance. This surprised many, as she had been openly identifying as a lesbian before.
While on "Celebrity Big Brother," JoJo and Chris Hughes from "Love Island" were often spotted enjoying each other's company. Their relationship began even though JoJo was still dating non-binary influencer Kath Ebbs at that time. Since leaving reality TV, JoJo and Chris have frequently been seen together, making their relationship clear.
In a recent chat on SiriusXM's "Smith Sisters Live," JoJo discussed her sexual identity, stressing that dating Chris doesn't mean she isn't still queer.
"Just because I'm in a heterosexual relationship doesn't mean I'm straight," JoJo pointed out during her interview. She added, "And hey, if I suddenly declared ‘Yeah, I'm straight.' Fine. But I'm not straight."
JoJo, known also as a singer, expanded on this: "Sure, I'm in love with a guy, but that's not a reason my past experiences should be erased."
Before her time on "Celebrity Big Brother," JoJo was with influencer Kath Ebbs. The two ended things shortly after, and JoJo soon confirmed her new relationship with Chris.
During her radio appearance, JoJo expressed her admiration and love towards Chris, while also honoring her past relationships. "The first time I fell in love was with a woman," she said. "I've been in relationships with women, a non-binary person, and now a man."
Talking about her current relationship, JoJo said, "I've never felt a love quite like this before." She added, "Falling in love with him has been one incredible experience."
Chris's dad, Paul, even hinted at wedding bells during an interview, saying, “We wouldn't be surprised if they're married by Christmas.” He noted, "St Mary's Church nearby would be just perfect."
JoJo has also addressed some criticism from parts within LGBTQ+ circles regarding her relationship with Chris. While she's clarified she doesn't solely identify as a lesbian, she embraces her identity as a queer person.
In June, JoJo talked about feeling pressured sometimes about labeling her sexuality. She shared how she occasionally felt boxed in but always strives towards living her true self.
As often happens with public figures, JoJo Siwa's exploration with love and identity takes place under constant public gaze, bringing about both criticism and admiration. Her journey highlights just how intricate personal identity can be and underscores why embracing oneself, amid external pressures, matters.
