Coaching young athletes presents unique challenges. There are the expectations of parents, the diverse needs of athletes, and the goal of reaching young sports enthusiasts in a way that not only boosts their performance but also educates them as individuals.
Joey Cifelli is someone who knows this path well. As a former Division I diver at Purdue University, Joey qualified for the NCAA Championships in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events and aspired to join the USA Olympic team. His academic achievements are notable as well, earning him a spot on the Academic All Big Ten list.
At the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, Joey secured a place in the top twelve. The following year, he achieved fourth place at the World Championships Trials and third at the U.S. Diving National Championships. By 2018, he had reached the top 20 at the NCAA Championships.
Throughout these competitive years, Joey maintained a perspective on his diving career that has informed his current role as a coach. He has taken these life lessons with him, teaching young divers the importance of the journey over the destination.
"The ultimate goal isn't just about winning a meet or making a team. It's about developing skills for life," Joey shared in a recent interview. "The amazing thing about sports is that they prepare you to handle success and failure every day. You perform well or poorly in a dive, but the real lesson lies in learning to overcome stress and obstacles."
Joey has embraced a path of coaching youth in the sport he loves. He shares these valuable life lessons with his young athletes, encouraging them to enjoy the journey. "When you're training every day, it can be hard to take a step back and see the bigger picture. Practice takes time," he explained.
"If I'm learning a new skill on the job, I don't expect immediate success. Just like in diving, it's about repetition and persistence," Joey added.
Joey Cifelli's journey even brought him to the television show "Holey Moley," where he stood alongside judge and diving legend Greg Louganis. Joey sees diving as a sport where he can freely express himself, especially as a gay man.
"Diving has always felt like an inclusive sport to me," Joey reflected. "It's something that allowed me to express myself comfortably, even when other aspects of my identity felt challenging to share."
Joey encourages his young athletes to focus beyond the pool. "Diving is about more than just perfecting a dive. It's about preparing for life beyond the sport," he said. "Sport offers a unique opportunity to experience emotions similar to those encountered in adulthood, but in a more immediate way."
Joey’s approach to coaching is rooted in both the highest aspirations within the sport and the realities of life. He aims to prepare his divers not just for their athletic careers but for the challenges and triumphs they will encounter in life.
Joey's story serves as an inspiration to many, demonstrating that the skills and experiences gathered in sports can transcend the boundaries of the pool and shape a fulfilling life. His dedication to fostering the growth of young athletes, both as competitors and as individuals, makes him an ideal mentor for aspiring divers.
