Joe Locke: Breaking Free from Imposter Syndrome After Heartstopper's Success

Joe Locke, a talented young actor who mesmerized us all as Charlie Spring in Netflix's beloved series, *Heartstopper*, has opened up about a personal struggle with imposter syndrome. At just 21, Locke shot up in fame with his role as a gay schoolboy falling head over heels with popular rugby player Nick Nelson, played by Kit Connor.

The path from breakout star

Locke's journey skyrocketed with *Heartstopper*, paving a bright path in his acting career. This rising star has since taken on diverse roles, like joining Disney+ Marvel's series *Agatha All Along* and gracing Broadway in *Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street*. Next up? His West End debut in *Clarkston*.

Confronting imposter syndrome

During a candid chat on *How To Fail With Elizabeth Day*, Locke got real about grappling with imposter syndrome—a feeling where you second-guess your achievements and worry about being 'found out'. These doubts have shadowed him, refusing still, at times, not quite fade away.

"I feel like an imposter in my career because I didn't just get handed this job; I was very lucky," Locke admits. "I was fortunate that *Heartstopper* chose me, and that I landed a great agent, and then I was lucky other opportunities followed."

Traversing industry hurdles

Locke expressed how unsure he felt about his place in acting. "For a long time, I didn't feel like I necessarily belonged in my job. I didn't believe I could make a career out it," he said. "There are still moments when I'm so grateful I forget I worked hard getting here."

AdapTING TO A NEW LIFESTYLE

Reflecting during podcast, Locke acknowledged how *Heartstopper's* success changed his life dramatically, making him feel older than his years. Growing up on Isle Of Man, entering entertainment industry, Locke felt he lived life "like someone in their mid-thirties" even though he was just 20.

"I realized last year; I was living life much older, and I was only 20," he confessed. "Visiting friends at universities made me feel out place."

Initially, Locke felt resentful that career stole typical youthful moments, but learned embrace his dream job's reality. "I just need enjoy youth through parts I can," he concluded .

Reflecting on youthful moments

When asked about youthful moments he longed experienced, Locke mentioned "having summer fling, going club and kissing someone, or taking spontaneous holiday Majorca friends."

The future *Heartstopper*

As *Heartstopper* gears up final chapter, *Heartstopper Forever*, filming wrapped July. Locke shared behind-scenes snapshot co-star Kit Connor, captioned, "Bye Charlie x thank you<3." The film, slated 2026 release, delves challenges keeping long-distance relationship alive as Nick heads university.
